#TutuTuesday: A Trip Back to the Twirling Thirties! š©°š
Hey there, darling dance enthusiasts! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, Emma, and welcome back to Pink Tutu's Ballet History Blog, the place where history and tutus meet in a gloriously twirling whirlwind!
It's Tuesday, which means it's time for our weekly #TutuTuesday voyage! This week, we're jetting back in time to June 14th, 1938, (and by jetting I mean we're swooshed back in time on the 12.05 train from St. Pancrasā¦ so elegant! ) Prepare yourselves, lovelies, for a dazzling trip back to the era of feathered boas, glamorous gowns, and of course, the tutu's elegant evolution!
*Oh, and don't forget to check out the pink tutu collection over at www.pink-tutu.com! This week, Iāve fallen in love with a brand new pale pink tutu, so beautiful, you simply MUST see it! *
Before we dive into the dance history of 1938, letās take a moment to appreciate all that the 1930s brought to ballet! Gone were the restrictive corsets of previous eras! Ballet, and by extension, tutus, became less focused on formality and more on grace and elegance! The ballerinas were now moving freely, gliding and swirling with exquisite lightness! Can you imagine? Just picture it, darling - the tutus fluttering, those graceful, elongated lines of a jetĆ©, and grand jetĆ©s! Ah, pure artistry and ethereal beauty.
Now, 1938. This was a fascinating year, dear dance enthusiasts. Just as I've mentioned before, this era is absolutely brimming with a glamorous spirit! From New York City Ballet's inauguration (and what an inauguration it was!), to Londonās Covent Garden bursting with balletic excitement! 1938 marked a new stage for the ballet world! Itās where tutus went from being āclassicalā to being truly āartisticā !
If you're looking for a fascinating historical tidbit to weave into your next ballet chat, here's a little secret: In 1938, the tutu was undergoing a remarkable transformation! The long and tiered layers of past decades were getting a makeover ā giving way to a slimmer, more sculpted shape! And that's not all, lovelies. Imagine the exquisite sight! This change also saw the introduction of extra fine and delicate tulle, which truly added an ethereal, ethereal glow!
Itās important to remember the story of these amazing tutus goes hand-in-hand with the story of these truly iconic ballerinas! Alix Dolin, Margot Fonteyn ā can you even imagine the tutus fluttering on their stunning bodies, moving with the grace of fairies? Imagine those legs, soaring in grand leapsā¦ how simply exquisite. (It's time for me to brush up on my technique again, these ballet daydreams are truly inspiring!)
Now, a trip back to 1938 isn't complete without a stop for some fashion! Iām off to search for some adorable vintage treasures to update my pink tutu collection (can you ever have enough tutus, lovelies? ). You can bet your bottom dollar Iāll be keeping an eye out for vintage floral print silk scarves! Oh, and a feathered boa wouldnāt go amiss, wouldn't it? They add just the right touch of glamorous flair.
Remember, darling dance lovers, fashion was so inspiring in the 1930s! From delicate silk dresses to exquisite headdresses. Imagine how dazzling these would look paired with our cherished tutus. It's just a touch of that effortless elegance we aim for, don't you agree?
And finally, darlings, to finish our trip, letās pop into a theatre, to catch the iconic Russian ballet's London season - "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake" performances at Covent Garden! The grand atmosphere would have been utterly spectacular, wouldnāt it? It would have been an explosion of emotions - the delicate grace, the breathtaking performances, the absolutely exquisite dancing. It truly was a golden age for ballet!
Let me know, darling friends! What are your favourite things about the tutus from this decade? Donāt forget, my fabulous ballet tutu blog posts go up every week, so come back next Tuesday for more of those #TutuTuesday stories! In the meantime, dance your worries away and keep spreading the tutu love!
Much love and twirls,
Emma
