#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: June 21st, 1938 - A Parisian Summer
Hello, darling Tutu Lovers!
Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we explore the captivating history of the tutu. This week, we're taking a trip back in time to June 21st, 1938, and believe me, my lovely readers, you're going to want to pack your dancing shoes for this one. Itās #TutuTuesday post number 5556 and I'm so excited to take you all on this Parisian adventure!
Paris, the City of Lights, the City of Loveā¦and the City of Tutus?
Well, perhaps not yet in 1938, but believe me, darling, this is just the beginning of the Parisian tutu story! Now, before we go any further, letās all agree, nothing says āeleganceā and āfemininityā quite like a beautiful, pink tutu in my opinion. Right? But as a fashion enthusiast, and you know I am, darling, youāve got to agree there is an exciting kind of freedom that comes with a simple tutu.
Back to Paris 1938: A Trip in the Pinkest Train
Just imagine, the sunshine beaming down on the Parisian streets, the sound of accordions floating through the air, and the intoxicating smell of freshly baked croissants! Imagine me, arriving in Paris in my best pink tutu (as is tradition) and the air buzzing with excitement for a ballet performance at the prestigious Palais Garnier! Just the sight of this magnificent building, so ornate, so beautiful, is enough to get my heart pounding with excitement!
Today we will look at the tutu in dance and on the street, for there are some fantastically fashionable trends from 1938 that you can still try, in a more contemporary style of course.
The Dance World
Now, darling, letās step inside this magnificent theatre, for I hear itās buzzing with anticipation for tonight's performance! Tonight's show, āLes Sylphides,ā is a ballet classic. With a breathtaking and graceful, timeless performance of romantic choreography and sublime musical composition. Now, you know how much I love ballet shows, and imagine this, my little tutu fans, on this stage, we see some truly exquisite dancers, swirling and twirling with ethereal elegance in tutus. Thereās something quite special about the tutu - it evokes a timeless femininity and an artistic spirit that captivates audiences all over the world!
You see, by 1938, the tutu was beginning to become a very specific fashion style of the stage. There are very specific ways it can be designed, even now, to suit each particular ballerina. That beautiful romantic style is, you guessed it, one of the reasons I adore these wonderful pieces of dance wear. You may not see tutus on the street much in 1938 but the dance stage is filled with it!
I wonder what will be worn tonight at the Paris Opera, imagine, my dearest Tutu Fans, watching tutus take flight with incredible grace and artistic elegance. It truly is a remarkable sight to behold, donāt you agree?
On The Streets of Paris 1938
After the show, a quick coffee in one of the quaint cafes near the theatre and then time to observe the street fashion trends. In Paris 1938, fashion is everything! Parisian women are always on trend and look to the stage for style inspiration. The Parisian street was my personal catwalk. You could say I am a ātutu advocateā, youāll find a variety of dresses that embrace the tutu look in this exciting time!
Imagine flowing, full skirts and playful, playful details like ribbons, bows, and even lace. There is definitely a feminine approach to the tutu-style trends of this period, and some of them can look wonderfully chic! There are also some more conservative styles in 1938. Even with an influx of these lovely looks, some still stick with a less flouncy, less ruffled look, however, the influence of the tutu is clearly present in the use of delicate fabrics, and I do think it is a fantastic style choice, darling.
What I love most is how the tutu, on and off stage, represents the strength and femininity of this wonderful era.
What am I Wearing?
I have opted for a more traditional look tonight: a beautiful vintage pink tutu, darling, of course, complete with the perfect vintage lace bow. This is my perfect blend of delicate charm and modern chic. A beautiful pastel shade pink - you simply can't go wrong with pink.
I must say, the tutus you will find today can look very different depending on your personal style.
Now darling, remember, if you want a look at a real 1938 ballerina's style of tutu you need to pop into one of the many fantastic theatres and venues, even now, for their dance performances. They can be found all around the world, darling.
This wonderful vintage vibe, darling, the influence of stage, the romance and elegance - it all comes back to one simple design! The tutu really is an icon of a time period in which women wanted to be free to express their femininity, style and graceful energy - not just on the stage but in everyday life. Until next Tuesday, stay beautiful and stay glamorous, darlings!
Lots of love, Emma

Emma loves pink and her goal is to get everyone wearing pink tutus. A good way to start is to show off some photos in this blog with a āmodernā spin on the styles. If you can add more about each date that would be great.
