#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - August 16th, 1938

Post Number 5564

Good morning, darlings! It's a glorious Tuesday morning here in Paris, and I'm absolutely brimming with excitement! You know why? Because it's #TutuTuesday! Time to take a peek into the fascinating world of ballet history. Today, we're stepping back to August 16th, 1938. Put on your fanciest pink tutus, grab a cuppa, and settle in, because we're about to dive into a time where the ballet world was abuzz with glamour and grace.

Before we get to the exciting stuff happening on this particular August 16th, let's take a moment to appreciate just how incredibly exciting it is to be able to travel through time! I get to see so much beautiful ballet and explore the history of these gorgeous tutus! It’s truly the best way to spend my days, trust me. I fund all of this exciting travel thanks to my love of the ballet. My ballet performances earn me just enough to keep those travel time machine costs at bay!

Travelling the World By Train

It's so wonderful that the trains are running like clockwork these days, it makes travel so easy! You can hop on a train to a show in Paris one evening and be in Vienna or Rome by the following afternoon, it's simply splendid! Of course, I pack my suitcase with at least two or three tutus just in case, and sometimes a fabulous feather boa for good measure! You never know what sort of fancy party or social gathering you'll find yourself attending in this delightful world we inhabit.

1938: A Year of Elegance and Innovation

This period in time is simply magical! It was an era of impeccable style, and the ballet world reflected that beautifully. 1938 saw some real innovative and stylish steps taken in the world of the tutu. Now, while the basic shape was pretty much fixed in the early days of the tutu, the fabric, and the details on them? That's where the creativity shone! It was a time of exploration - shorter tutus with daring asymmetrical lines, bold new color combinations, and even a foray into sequins that simply sparkles!

August 16th, 1938: The Ballet World Lights Up

Speaking of lights sparkling! The stage was definitely lit up on this very date. It was the opening night for a brand new production of “Swan Lake” at the Paris Opera. Can you imagine, the iconic ballet and the legendary stage! I couldn't miss it. My favourite, The Dance of the Cygnets with those beautiful lines and the shimmering, white tutus was so dazzling! And oh, the story itself... the passionate romance and the stunning ballet! I simply adored it, even more than my first encounter in Moscow, and if I may be so bold, even more spectacular than Giselle. It truly showed me how this elegant form of dance could reach even higher!

Tutu Shopping Extravaganza

Naturally, I was obliged to visit a few Parisian boutiques. The grand houses of Chanel, Dior, and Lanvin were a pure delight! Every frock and garment was a work of art. The fabric alone, oh darling, the velvet! You've simply got to have a little touch of velvet in your wardrobe, and what better than a touch of velvet on a lovely ballerina tutu?

Time Travelling for Tutus

Do you know, my very favorite place for ballet in the world right now? I would say London, or perhaps even the Russian Imperial Ballet in the stunning Petersburg, although I will have to get on over to America and the New York Ballet very soon, I have heard simply incredible things about their Four Temperaments. I hope you've all started planning your tutu wardrobe for the season, darling!

Spread the Love of the Tutu

As always, don't forget to spread the joy and share this blog with all your fellow tutu enthusiasts! The more of us wearing pink, the brighter and happier the world becomes.

Stay twirling, my dears!
