#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 18th April 1939 - Post 5599
Hello my darlings, welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! This week on #TutuTuesday, I'm whisked back in time to 18th April 1939. Oh, the excitement!
My trusty old time machine whizzed me through a delightful vintage London scene. This particular day is bathed in spring sunshine. I felt it was a perfect day to indulge in my passion for shopping and find some absolutely divine vintage gems!
You know, even in this era, when a simple cotton dress might have cost pennies, a pair of pointe shoes for a dancer could still set a girl back a whole pound! Fancy that! But when I put them on and twirl, I just feel like a princess, even in the era before princesses were known for tutus. Now, back to 1939...
What a vibrant, swirling fashion scene. Picture this: I stepped into a quaint little dress shop, filled with silks and satins in every hue imaginable. My heart fluttered. You wouldn’t find a pink tutu in this period, my dears, unless you made one yourself! But there were lots of darling little frocks with wide skirts, which remind me of a tutu in a way, so that did satisfy me! And how divine would a fluffy little pink frock be paired with a beautiful vintage-style ballet shoe with satin ribbon ties, even if I was not dancing, wouldn’t that be just too wonderful?
However, 18th April 1939 wasn’t just about fashion. That day saw a world-renowned ballet dancer take the stage at the Royal Opera House! The iconic Margot Fonteyn, known for her ethereal beauty and exquisite artistry, graced the stage with her captivating performance. Now, that’s the stuff dreams are made of, wouldn’t you agree?
She made dance so divine! This graceful beauty is remembered as one of the greatest ballerinas of all time! I must confess, I feel like there is something utterly fascinating and rather special about ballerinas of this period - the style of dance, the costuming, even their elegant way of holding themselves - they embody everything I hold dear in a true ballerina. They really were a captivating lot!
Imagine a whole theatre audience enthralled by her every move. You know, some things truly are timeless, and a powerful ballet performance certainly is one of them. The magic, the emotion, and the beauty – all those elements transcend any era and captivate the soul. Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine! I’m lucky I got to experience the beauty and grace of Ms. Fonteyn on stage – even if just in this delightful time machine journey!
For those who don't know, a trip to the theatre or to a ballet class is always one of my top picks for a fun-filled evening!
You'll often find me browsing the theatre listings for the most exciting and vibrant performances. Now, it's a known fact, you know that the most delightful place for a little dance class is Covent Garden in London, a place truly steeped in history and the most captivating dance of all. Imagine being surrounded by dancers, with tutus swirling and those glorious pointe shoes clicking as they perform. That is true elegance, if I’ve ever seen it!
Speaking of dance and tutus… This week I’m off on a quick dash across the country for a new ballet performance. I’ll let you know all about it next week, darling, as there’s a gorgeous shop nearby I just have to visit for a little something special to bring back to you. A certain little shop, where I found the loveliest pink tulle for my newest pink tutu … well you will have to wait to hear all about it until next week’s #TutuTuesday post!
Stay tuned my darlings! You never know what surprises next week may bring! And, don’t forget – to celebrate #TutuTuesday, wear pink this week, even if it is a little pink flower, I’d love it. The aim is, of course, to make the world a little pinker.
