Tutu Tuesday #5775: Back to the Golden Age!
Hiya lovelies! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast and chronicler of all things fabulous! I'm so excited for you to join me on this week's journey, as we travel back in time to a gloriously stylish era! Buckle up your ballet shoes, because we're stepping into the glamorous world of September 1st, 1942.
Can you even imagine, darling? It was the midst of a world war, but even amidst such hardship, the human spirit found joy in the beauty of dance! Now, while war was raging, our fashion world wasn’t all drab uniforms and drab clothes. The glamorous world of dance and the beauty of ballet flourished during the war! We are going to go back and witness it.
Just like in my beloved Derbyshire, where even in these harsh times, we all find solace and escapism in a delightful twirl, ballet was, and still is, the perfect refuge from the humdrum of everyday life.
And honestly, can we talk about 1942 fashion? Forget practicality, this era was a burst of colour and joy. You wouldn't catch me dead in a drab wartime dress! Those glorious, voluminous gowns – think voluminous fabrics in heavenly shades of blue, green, and even some daring shades of pink! Now, that's what I call fashion!
While we can't always wear big pouffy ballgowns these days, it doesn't stop us from adding a splash of fun, just like the amazing women of the 1940s did! After all, you know what they say, dear friends: "If life gives you lemons, add a bit of pink tulle!"
Now, let's talk tutus, because wouldn't this time be utterly incomplete without a mention of these fabulous ballet-inspired wonders? It’s no secret that my life revolves around those amazing little dance costumes! I've travelled the world in my little pink tutu, soaking up the magic of the past, and let me tell you, tutus have been around in their glorious glory since… well, forever!
They were dancing their way into the hearts of ballet lovers since the dawn of dance! There's a little secret I've learned in my time travels: even during those wild times, those lovely dancers always added a touch of tulle to their repertoire!
In 1942, imagine a dance studio lit by flickering gaslights – so romantic, isn't it?– and those amazing, daring dancers gliding in tutus like feathers! Those magical tutus, each a burst of sheer beauty against the backdrop of a changing world.
The way a ballerina leaps in her tulle tutu? It's an absolute vision! You can almost hear the "oohs" and "aahs" of the captivated audience! It truly is a spectacle worth witnessing. You get me, don't you, my lovely tutu-loving readers!
Oh, and just for a moment, imagine a ballet company – just like those from back in the day – performing in a theatre lit up by soft candlelight! Wouldn’t it be beautiful to watch those enchanting ballerinas swirling and leaping, all while wearing exquisite, sparkling, soft, romantic pink tutus? You bet! Those gorgeous tutus weren't just pretty to look at – they actually revolutionised dance by allowing for movement and graceful flow! Think of all those twirls, jumps, and elegant movements. It's like they're gliding across the stage!
Isn't it incredible how, even back in those days, even when everything felt a little too serious, they still found a way to create something beautiful and inspiring? Ballet was (and still is!) a form of artistic rebellion against the hardships of life, a rebellion with ribbons and tulle!
That’s my #TutuTuesday for this week, darlings. Don’t forget, a pink tutu is the perfect accessory for all life's special moments - just ask those lovely 1940s ballerinas! And who knows what delightful fashion discoveries are waiting for us next week?
Don’t forget to let me know what your favourite tutu moments from 1942 are. Drop me a comment on my website, www.pink-tutu.com and until next time, wear pink! Love you all!
P.S. What's going on in the world on this date in 1942, you ask? Well, I wouldn't be doing this blog justice if I didn't give you some more fascinating tidbits! On this date in 1942, The Japanese army continued to gain momentum in the Second World War, but on a lighter note, The Royal Ballet company continued to wow London audiences, while dancers like the lovely, fabulous Moira Shearer – a legendary ballerina from the period – took the world by storm with her exceptional talent! That’s why, my little tutu-loving fashionistas, if you can’t quite grasp the power of dance in times of struggle, just take a look at their example! And I promise – you’ll never forget a pink tutu again! 😉
