#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 5954 - 5th February 1946

Oh hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-obsessed time traveller, Emma, back again with another juicy instalment of Ballet Tutu History! Today we're waltzing our way back to the 5th of February 1946, a date that might not seem like much, but trust me, it's a real doozy for tutu enthusiasts!

Now, I've gotta be honest, 1946 was a bit of a mixed bag, fashion-wise. We're still clinging onto the last vestiges of war-time practicality - think nipped-in waists, and a bit of a lack of fabric. But believe me, the desire for glamorous dressing was still very much alive, bubbling away under the surface, just waiting for the right moment to erupt in a flurry of feathers and sequins!

So, picture it: 1946. The war is over, and we're finally starting to emerge from the shadows. Everyone's buzzing with excitement, longing to get back to some sense of normalcy. In the ballet world, however, normality looked pretty darn glamorous. Let me tell you, these ballerinas were just dying to ditch the practical war-time tunics and get back into those magnificent tutus. The longer the better, darlings! And what a treat they had in store...

The Return of the Romantic Tutu

Remember those glorious, billowing tutus from the Belle Époque? Think airy, ethereal, almost unrealistic layers of tulle, designed to accentuate the ballerina’s every graceful move. Well, they were making a triumphant comeback! And darling, let me tell you, it was spectacular! Imagine a soft, billowing tutu, floating around the stage like a dream. Just heavenly!

You could practically hear the gasp of the audience as the dancers, looking ethereal and perfectly poised, took to the stage. Those long tutus, perfectly crafted with a generous amount of tulle, gave them the grace and freedom to move like angels, bringing every pirouette, every leap, to life! The whole essence of ballet was back in full swing - the beauty of the art form shining through with each fluid movement.

Tutus at the Ballet

To give you a little glimpse of what was happening in the world of ballet that very day, we had the American Ballet Theatre kicking things off with a show at the Metropolitan Opera House. My dear, there were probably some divine tutus strutting their stuff on that stage. They say there were lots of exciting debuts happening then, showcasing just how talented the ballerinas of the day were! I can only imagine the magical spectacle! It was around this time, dear readers, that ballerinas started experimenting with even more lavish costumes, adding all sorts of beautiful, bold embellishments. And these new designs had to go with their amazing tutus! Just divine!

Tutus: for everyone!

Emma
