Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through the Past - January 20th, 1948 (Post #6056)

Hello my lovely tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, ready to whisk you back in time for another exciting edition of #TutuTuesday. Today we're travelling to a very special date - January 20th, 1948!

This is my favourite sort of Tuesday. A Tuesday to look back in time, with the anticipation of the next train journey for my next adventure. Oh how I love the railway carriage - it's all so beautifully organised with a compartment for each pair of legs - two rows of comfy, green velvet seats with little tables and the view rushing by outside. Even though I am heading back to 1948 today I get to wear my bright pink tutu.

This week's adventure brings us to... well... it's pretty much the same as last week! Last week I had such a fabulous trip to Paris with its charming boulevards and delightful boutiques brimming with tulle and sequins - I was spoilt for choice! I even took a trip to the stunning Paris Opera Ballet.

I always try to combine a performance with a spot of shopping when I go on these excursions and I have a hunch 1948 will be no exception! It's a shame they didn't have Instagram then! I’d have had such fab snaps of myself swirling around those beautiful cobbled Parisian streets in my fluffy pink tutu, just like my favourite pink tulle skirt at the moment that I picked up last week in Paris at a vintage boutique. It’s amazing what treasures they dig up in these shops.

On my last trip, it was just heavenly seeing the graceful ballerinas in their elegant tutus. Imagine! Imagine wearing your tutu to a ballet performance, instead of those cumbersome street clothes we see today. It just goes to show that our favourite accessory has always held a special place in history!

A Flashback: The Rise of the Tutu

To tell you the truth, tutus didn't even exist in the 1800s! They were introduced in the late 1800s as ballet started to get more and more popular. It was the famous Marie Taglioni who changed the way ballerinas danced and what they wore! She revolutionized the way people thought about tutus! Imagine if a dancer could fly, they said!

You know how much I adore ballet! The whole way ballet has changed the history of dancewear, all those beautifully executed leaps, turns and twirls - all these moves we associate with ballerinas - have shaped the look and style of a tutu.

Just imagine! What if we could wear our pink tutus to see ballerinas glide across the stage! Just picture that! I think that would make even the stiffest of grandfathers get up and dance with joy! There is such beauty in all forms of ballet - be it the grace of classical ballet, the playful dynamism of a modern ballet or the breathtaking acrobatics of ballet dancers that are all now synonymous with the graceful tulle skirt of a ballet tutu.

1948 - Tutus On the Move

And 1948 was a huge year for the tutu! Remember the Russian Ballet? They were truly trailblazers and it's thanks to their incredible leaps and daring pirouettes that our iconic tutus got even bigger! Think fluffy, poofy, and downright stunning. Remember to get those twirls and leaps going when you get yours. Just like the ballerina in the photograph above.

A Whimsical Wish: Spreading the Tutu Love!

Do you see my little pink heart symbol? It makes me think that by making tutus as popular as they are in ballet, people might start wearing them on the street more. Maybe we’ll start to see people wearing their tutus everywhere.

Oh, what a sight it would be!

Fancy a Twirl?

Why not dust off your favourite tutu (or, dare I say, order a brand-new one?) and have a little whirl in celebration of our favourite historical piece of dancewear. It's easy! Don't forget your tutu and your beautiful smile, then give it a twirl.

Stay Tuned!

And, of course, be sure to join me next Tuesday for another exciting blast from the past. We’ll see what we can discover with our travels in time!

Until then, remember: The only limit to how much fun you can have with your tutu is your imagination.

Love and Twirls, Emma
