#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 6114: The Dawn of a Tutu Revolution

Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller, and it's #TutuTuesday again! We're about to whisk you away to March 1st, 1949. Put on your best tulle and get ready for some delightful ballet history!

The train journey this week was an absolute delight! Picture it: a little steam engine chugging across the English countryside, a crisp breeze whipping my hair into a graceful whirlwind, and me, my dear readers, nestled in a compartment, utterly lost in a book about 18th-century fashion. How romantic!

Now, I know what you’re thinking - what was happening in the world of tutus back in 1949? Well, buckle up because we're going on a fascinating adventure.

You see, back in the late 1940s, the world was in a bit of a tizzy. World War II was just over, the fashion world was embracing the “New Look”, with full skirts and cinched waists being all the rage. In the ballet world, tutus were becoming increasingly popular as the length of skirts became shorter and the style of dancing changed. We were heading into the "golden age of ballet", with a focus on lightness, agility, and precision – all features enhanced by the freedom of a well-designed tutu.

A Parisian Revelation

Think Parisian boudoirs, smoky theaters, and a kaleidoscope of colors. We’re stepping back in time to the heart of ballet - Paris, 1949.

Now, darling, imagine: a vibrant performance, the theatre shimmering with light, the delicate pirouettes and soaring leaps of the ballerinas, all rendered in the glorious glory of tutus. A sight that could melt even the coldest heart! And you know what? The popularity of the tutu was rising, making a serious impact on fashion trends!

The Changing Shape of the Tutu

Our time traveling trip lands us smack dab in the midst of the evolving tutu! No longer was the "classical" tutu with its romantic tiered shape the only show in town. The short tutu with its flat skirt, called a tutu-à-la-française, was on the rise! This darling little skirt became the perfect partner for leaps and pirouettes, accentuating every graceful movement. The tutu had reached a pivotal point – it wasn’t just a costume, it was an essential part of the artistic performance.

*But of course, fashion wouldn't be fashion without some wonderful, unexpected twists! *

The early 1950s saw an intriguing addition to the tutu scene – the ballet-inspired tutu skirts. These frothy delights swept over the world, taking inspiration from the shorter length, fuller silhouette, and romantic feel of the ballet tutu.

Where Can You Get Your Tutu Fix?

Now, you may be thinking, "Emma, darling, where can I get my hands on these magnificent tutus?". And trust me, my fashion-loving friends, you are in for a treat.

I’d be thrilled to share a few of my favourite ballet shops. London’s Royal Opera House Shop has some delightful balletwear – you're sure to find a tutu to adore. Of course, you'll also find some pretty spectacular fashion houses like Dior, Christian Lacroix, and Balenciaga - and trust me, these brands LOVE their tutus! Don’t forget to check out smaller, independent boutiques in cities across Europe. The creative freedom of these little shops will leave you spoilt for choice!

Tutu Tuesday Tip!

It's all about the embellishments, darling! Remember the magic of tulle? Don’t forget about the wonderful layers of sequins and feathers – it’s an easy way to add a little je ne sais quoi to your tutu wardrobe!

Ballet Inspiration!

And now, darling, before we say au revoir for the week, here's something I've been itching to tell you: Have you seen the tutus worn in the Ballet Russes? If not, my dearest friends, run don't walk to a bookstore! Tutu heaven awaits you with every page you turn. I am practically obsessed.

Next week we're diving back into the archives to see what tutu delights we can unearth. Until then, embrace your inner ballerina and dance through your week with style. Oh, and don't forget to share your tutu fashion adventures on my website at www.pink-tutu.com!

Sending love and sunshine from the Land of Tutu, darling.

Emma xoxo
