Tutu Tuesday #6115: A Peek Behind the Curtain at 1949!
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another Tutu Tuesday! As you all know, I adore exploring the past, hopping on my trusty time machine (a vintage train carriage, naturally), and bringing you a glimpse of how the magical world of tutus evolved! Today, we're going back to March 8th, 1949 - a date filled with grace, glamour, and the softest swishes of tulle imaginable!
Now, I must confess, the 1940s weren't exactly a time when tutus were front and centre on every stage. The world was still adjusting to the post-war era, and fashion reflected that. But hold onto your sequins, dears, because 1949 was the year the "new look" made its grand entrance! You all know the iconic Christian Dior silhouette – a nipped waist, a full skirt, and all that flowing fabric! It sparked a fashion revolution, and tutus were not to be left behind.
Just imagine the whispers of the time! “Is this what ballerinas wear now, Miss...?" A "New Look" of sorts for ballet started emerging, moving away from the strict classical silhouettes of the past. It was all about a gentler, softer shape, more emphasis on femininity and fluidity. Imagine tutus swirling and twirling like so much diaphanous cloud, adding a touch of whimsy to the staid fashions of the time! The shorter, fuller, "ballerina" skirt became a staple for fashion icons of the era – the look even caught the eye of Queen Elizabeth!
Now, I know what you're thinking - “Emma, 1949? A bit early for all this tutu excitement!" But trust me, darling, tutus have always been a silent force, whispering a symphony of soft, delicate whispers through history. You just have to know where to listen.
Speaking of listening, there's a beautiful ballet happening tonight! The Royal Ballet in London, is staging a performance of "Giselle," and oh, my dears, it's breathtaking. The swirling white tutus of the ghostly Wilis are absolutely unforgettable. Their floating, almost spectral movements, just melt away your troubles. The very idea that the delicate grace of a tutu could be woven into a story about the sorrow and longing of lost love… well, it just gets my heart dancing!
But London isn't the only place for the Tutu-licious this week! In New York, a darling little shop just opened, selling all the essentials for budding ballerinas! Think ribbon, tulle, and endless shades of pink! Can't wait to check it out myself and stock up on some lovely bits! This is the perfect time to get creative and whip up your own custom pink tutu. What a fun weekend project!
You know what else is going on today, dear readers? It’s International Women’s Day! What better time to celebrate our feminine power and grace? We can learn a lot from ballerinas, wouldn't you say? It takes incredible strength, focus, and passion to achieve that perfect balance and poise. They really embody our #TutuTuesday ethos, don’t you think?
This week's Tutu Tuesday has given us a little insight into the early post-war dance scene and how those lovely tutus played their part in a changing world. Don't forget to check out those upcoming shows! And while you're at it, I encourage you all to find your own tutu magic! Maybe even a dash of pink… just because.
Remember to check in next week, my lovelies! We’ll be uncovering more enchanting tales of tutu history! Until then, happy twirling!
Your beloved Emma xx
