#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through the 1950s! 🩰🌸

Hello darlings! Welcome back to another dazzling edition of #TutuTuesday! 👑 Today, we’re travelling back in time – hop aboard the pink express to 5 September, 1950! And who could forget such a pivotal year? We were all on the edge of our pointe shoes! After all, 1950 marked the 25th anniversary of the Ballet Russes, and ballet was still having a moment in the spotlight. ✨

Let’s set the stage: picture it – New York City! The vibrant hum of the city, with a touch of that vintage elegance, perfectly in tune with our ballerina’s grace! Imagine ladies dressed in their finest silk dresses and gentlemen with crisp suits, enjoying a captivating performance in the prestigious Metropolitan Opera House. Ah, to have lived in that time! 🎭

Now, if you were a bit of a dance devotee like me in 1950, your eye would have been drawn to the costumes, or as we'd call them in those days, the “dance attire.” Tutus weren’t as colourful as we are used to, with pastel pinks and buttery yellows replacing the bright pinks and deep purples we adore today. A romanticism reigned, so it was more about flow and shape, a dreamy kind of dance experience.

Speaking of romantic, the dancers of the time were simply enchanting. Their delicate, graceful movements were just as entrancing as their costumes!

Of course, as the true pink-loving aficionado I am, it would have been all about the colour of the tulle. Now, the tutu was not a regular street-wear staple, not at all! Think of it like wearing a beautiful lace gown out in public… you'd get quite a few curious glances, my dears! 😂 But, let's not forget, I’m on a mission to make that tutu the must-have item on everyone's list, even on our regular strolls around London.

But, if you were to sneak a peek at the back stage of those dazzling performances in the 1950s, what you would discover would make your ballerina heart swoon! Costume designers were already using techniques to achieve that ethereal volume, like layers upon layers of beautiful tulle, and using soft, dreamy hues of pinks to highlight their artistry. Oh, how we all would have loved to peek at the sewing patterns and get some backstage inspiration!

Let's rewind to this specific date in 1950: September 5th, just one month away from the Grand Opening of the prestigious American Ballet Theatre in New York. Can you imagine? The grand stage, the spectacular lighting and the dazzling costumes, it’s almost as exciting as being here right now, right in the midst of our pink extravaganza!

We'll be taking a train journey back to England for next week's post, my dear fashionistas. The 1950s in England, well, it’s another story altogether! 👠 Join me, darling, and prepare yourself for a most exciting time travel adventure!
