#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1950-09-12 (Post #6194)
Bonjour, mes chéries! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you away to the magical world of ballet history! Today we're travelling to September 12th, 1950, just as the postwar era was swinging into full bloom. Think vibrant colours, blossoming fashion, and a society starting to re-discover the joy of the arts. It's the perfect setting for a sprinkle of ballet history, don't you think?
Fashionable Flare: Postwar Paris and the Rise of the TutuOh darling, Paris in 1950 was a symphony of style. From Dior's "New Look" with its dramatic skirts to the emergence of prêt-à-porter – ready-to-wear – fashion, it was a time of exciting evolution. It’s no wonder the world was starting to look to ballet for a little inspiration!
Just imagine: after years of austerity and war-time rations, everyone was keen for a little lightheartedness and frivolity. Ballet, with its vibrant costumes, swirling tutus, and graceful movements, was the perfect escape.
Imagine stepping onto the cobblestones of the Champs-Élysées, a vision of pink-tutu-perfection myself, feeling the thrill of the moment as everyone stops to admire my dance-inspired outfit! (Don't worry, I won't let the excitement get the better of me and leave me twirling in the middle of the street!).
Paris was where the magic happened:
- Ballet schools were flourishing with students eager to learn the elegant art. Imagine all those adorable ballerinas in their delicate tutus, preparing for their big performances!
- New dance styles, like Ballet-Jazz and Neoclassical ballet, were taking root and changing the very look of ballet. Imagine tutus evolving, becoming a bit more swishy and modern, while still holding onto the magic!
This was the time of the legendary Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. Oh, they were breathtaking! Their elegance and grace, combined with stunning costumes, made ballet the ultimate form of expression.
And the costumes? Absolutely divine! Imagine, delicate tulle layered on layers, hand-sewn with delicate embellishments. The colour palette was all about romance and fairytale-inspired fantasy. Think pale pinks, shimmering silver, and of course, a generous dash of glittering sequins!
Beyond the Stage: Tutus Take to the StreetLet's rewind back a little. September 12th, 1950, was a Tuesday, so no big ballet opening or world premiere. It was a day like any other, but even a regular Tuesday in 1950 could be incredibly exciting! It's a day that sparked the tutu-tastic feeling of ballet inspiration in everyday fashion.
The ladies of the day wore beautiful dresses and skirts, some perhaps inspired by the ballerinas they had seen at the ballet. It’s fascinating how the spirit of ballet can infuse the world beyond the theatre. Just imagine, wearing a gorgeous full-skirted frock or even just adding a a hint of a fluffy tulle petticoat to a stylish, tailored jacket. A splash of pink would be perfect for a hint of that ballerina magic!
*And, a little inside information: September 12th, 1950 was also a day to go shopping for those adorable ballerina shoes. Yes! You heard it right. Ballet slippers had started to become fashionable! * So you could add some of that ballerina style to your day-to-day life too. How completely adorable!
Back to the PresentBut don't worry, darling, it’s not just about the past. I'm all about looking towards the future with a little pink tutu sprinkled in.
Now that you've learned a bit about the history of tutus, take this information and apply it to your own look!
How can you add a little ballet-inspired touch to your outfit? Think layers of tulle, dainty floral prints, a soft touch of pink.
Perhaps a sprinkle of sequins, a gorgeous pair of ballet flats or even a fabulous feather boa will be just the ticket. And of course, a sprinkle of glitter to capture the essence of that 1950s spirit!
As we always say here at Pink-Tutu, don't be afraid to experiment and find the ballerina in yourself. You never know how a touch of tulle might change your day (or your wardrobe!)
Happy twirling and remember to stay fabulous!
Love,
Emma
