#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - September 26th, 1950 (Post 6196)
Hello lovelies! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina blogger, back again with another #TutuTuesday adventure! 🩰💖
This week, I've taken a trip back to the glorious 1950s, specifically to September 26th. Oh my, what a glamorous time to be alive! Imagine: crinoline skirts, perfectly sculpted curls, and a dazzling world of dance, where tutus were still finding their perfect place in the spotlight.
Now, picture this: Paris, the city of lights, the very heart of fashion. And me? In my exquisite pink tutu, of course, looking every inch the glamorous ballerina amongst the chic Parisians.
But first, a little background on our fabulous friend, the tutu. You see, dear readers, back in 1950, tutus were undergoing a delightful transformation. Imagine those gorgeous, voluminous, Romantic-era tutus with their layers and layers of tulle, like clouds of ethereal delight. Well, these beauties were being swapped out for a sleek, new design: the "tutu developpé," a creation by the renowned dancer and choreographer, Roland Petit.
This stunningly streamlined version featured multiple layers of tulle attached directly to a bodice, creating a more form-fitting silhouette that emphasized movement. Can you picture those graceful leaps and spins, effortlessly conveyed by this new style? Oh, it was a true revolution in dance wear!
And talking of revolutions... my trip today wouldn't be complete without mentioning one of the most revolutionary events of 1950: the premiere of "The Concert" by Igor Stravinsky. A magnificent composition that showcased the genius of this groundbreaking composer. My, how I wish I could have witnessed it myself! I'm practically levitating with anticipation just thinking about the energy and excitement in the Parisian air!
My dear readers, let me tell you, a ballet performance is such an exhilarating event. Not just for the sheer talent on stage but for the whole ambiance! The anticipation in the air, the shimmering dresses of the ladies, the crisp suits of the gentlemen... it's a sensory feast, a world away from the everyday!
Speaking of dress, wouldn't you know it, I just discovered the most darling shop called "Dior" during my Parisian jaunt! Ah, Christian Dior, the man who redefined fashion! Can you imagine, his iconic "New Look" with its flowing, feminine lines and stunning silhouettes, such a breath of fresh air! I managed to snag a few pieces to bring back to Derbyshire, and I can’t wait to show them off in my next blog post!
I also fell in love with the classic Parisian café culture – enjoying a café au lait with a buttery croissant, watching the world go by, the vibrant city a whirlwind of activity around me. Ah, Paris, the most romantic city in the world!
And then there were the trains! The wonderful journeys on the Orient Express, with their polished compartments and opulent dining carriages... Now, you see, I simply can't resist the charm of a grand old train. Especially one traversing the captivating landscapes of Europe, carrying me to new destinations and exciting adventures. It's the ultimate way to travel!
Don't you agree? This time-travelling business is incredibly exciting, full of glamour and discovery, but it's my travels in pink that make my heart soar. My passion, you see, my lifelong mission, is to spread the joy of the tutu to every corner of the world! My lovely readers, you have my blessings to dance your heart out! And what better way to celebrate life than with a twirl or two in a fabulous, pink tutu? So get out there and twirl!
That’s all for this week, my lovely tutu enthusiasts! Stay tuned for more #TutuTuesday adventures and let's keep celebrating the timeless elegance of ballet and all things tutu! And remember, as always, spread the love – pink tutu love, that is! Until next week, stay chic!
Bisous!
Emma 💕🩰
