#TutuTuesday: A Trip Back in Time to 1953 - Post Number 6331 🩰
Hello, lovelies! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling blogger, Emma, back with another #TutuTuesday!
This week, we're going to take a twirl back to the magical year of 1953. Can you imagine, darlings, a time without online shopping for your tutus?! Honestly, the thought gives me a shiver. Luckily, as you know, I travel back in time to ensure all you lovelies are getting your ballet fashion fix, no matter the decade! And trust me, in 1953, fashion was truly captivating!
Today is April 28th, and what a day! 1953 saw the coronation of our very own Queen Elizabeth II! Talk about a grand spectacle. I just know there were so many beautifully dressed people - from the Queen's own stunning gown to the ladies attending the event, with their charming, flowing dresses and hats.
Now, darling, you know how I love to weave our beloved ballet history into fashion history! So, what was going on in the world of tutus in 1953?
The Ballet World:
Oh my! Ballet was exploding in the 50s! Just think, iconic ballerinas like Margot Fonteyn, Alicia Markova, and the extraordinary Dame Margot Fonteyn, were in their prime. Their incredible artistry was capturing audiences across the world, sparking a surge of excitement in the ballet world.
What truly had me swooning, lovelies, was the rise of the choreographic ballet. You see, choreographers were truly experimenting, pushing the boundaries with how dance was interpreted. It was such a groundbreaking era, resulting in these absolutely mind-blowing ballet shows that are still studied today!
A Focus on Movement:
Let's talk tutus, shall we? You wouldn't believe how important movement was in 1953. Gone were the heavy, cumbersome, "ballroom" tutus of the 1800s. Instead, designers were opting for airy, light fabrics. Think, gossamer layers of tulle and delicate, fine fabrics. The tutus were shorter too! This allowed the ballerinas to move with such grace and precision! They could leap, spin, and arabesque without a worry, which made their dancing look absolutely magical! And if we're talking tutus, my loves, you just know I've got to bring it back to the colour pink.
Pink is the Colour, My Dears!
Pink was all the rage in the 1950s! It symbolised sweetness, innocence, and feminine charm. And what's more, my fellow ballet-lovers, think of the beautiful contrast of a delicate pink tutu against a backdrop of a dramatic stage. Just heavenly, my dears! I adore how the colours dance together, creating this magnificent spectacle, both elegant and dazzling. It makes for some incredible pictures!
Tutu Trends:
You might have thought that only professional ballerinas got to wear tutus back then, but darling, think again! Tutus weren't just confined to the stage. You could find these beauties as costume pieces for school performances, amateur dance companies, or even fancy dress parties!
Just picture this: a room filled with adorable little girls dressed in pink tutus, their faces aglow with excitement. Isn't it a delightful scene?! They could twirl to their hearts' content, twirling all their dreams into motion!
More Than a Garment:
Now, you see, my darling lovelies, a tutu is more than just a piece of clothing. It's a symbol of freedom, of expressing yourself through movement, and, of course, it is always fashionable. Just imagine, you could slip on a gorgeous pink tutu, a touch of glitter, a bit of eyeliner, and, bam! Instant transformation to a radiant princess ballerina. You've gotta love it!
My Trip to the Royal Opera House:
Just imagine my thrill when I travelled back to 1953 and watched the grand Royal Ballet performing at the Royal Opera House in London! It was pure magic! The graceful dancers in their exquisite tutus twirled, jumped, and flowed across the stage in perfect harmony. The vibrant lights reflecting off the beautiful tulle created an atmosphere of sheer elegance. The tutus really became alive!
And darling, you just know I couldn't resist picking up some pretty pastel pink accessories and tutus in vintage boutiques to complete my ballet-inspired look. I mean, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do! Just imagine, darling, me gliding through the cobbled streets of London in my chicest vintage outfit. I can see the passersby’s smiles of wonder as I go by! The whole experience was just simply divine. It made my heart beat with glee.
Shopping Trip!
Speaking of shopping, 1953 was a fabulous time for all things fashion! A trip to Harrods or Liberty in London was a treat fit for a ballerina queen. The window displays were filled with the latest couture pieces, a delight for the eyes. There was this shop, in London, my lovelies, it was a charming little shop selling the most stunning ballet outfits. Think handmade velvet and silk leotards in beautiful rich colours! I was a girl in a candy store, truly!
You see, darlings, even in 1953, the elegance of ballet and the beauty of tutus played a role in shaping fashion. So, next time you step into a tutu, let your inner ballerina twirl free. Let your imagination take you back in time. Let those tutus guide you on your dance floor adventures, wherever they may lead you!
