#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past! - 5th May 1953 🌸🩰
Greetings, fellow tutu-lovers!
Welcome to this week's #TutuTuesday installment, post number 6332 (yes, I've been chronicling this magical fabric for a while!) Today, we're taking a trip down memory lane to 5th May 1953. Buckle up, darlings, because this trip will be particularly special!
Oh, it’s simply divine to be back in this glorious time! Today is brimming with history and so many gorgeous clothes! You’ll forgive me for getting lost in the shops for a while; I simply have to experience the thrill of the 1950s shops and boutiques again! And, what a grand opportunity to slip into some new ballet shoes - oh my, I have to share these vintage treasures with you soon! I just can’t help but swoon over their delicate satin ribbons and perfect pointy toes.
Now, back to the day! A grand occasion in the history of fashion and dance: The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II! Imagine, a sea of vibrant colour and elegant silhouettes adorning the streets. Talk about a day where the love of beauty reigned! And yes, I'm almost positive tutus made their way into some very exciting outfits – even if only subtly, as delicate details, maybe on the hems of frocks or tucked away as elegant under-layers.
Speaking of our beloved tutu, remember how we discovered last week that the 1930s brought about a revolution in tutu designs? They became lighter and more airy – perfectly capturing the lightness of movement and elegance of classical ballet. I bet they were positively enchanting in 1953 too. Just imagine the beautiful ballerinas performing at the coronation celebration – graceful twirls and shimmering tutus reflecting the excitement and grandeur of the day.
Speaking of dazzling performances, I caught a phenomenal show at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, this week. And yes, you'll be unsurprised to know, the ballet was a complete triumph. The tutus, oh, they were something else! I do love a good tulle design, and these were perfectly formed, flowing gracefully with each pirouette. So, a trip back in time not only provides insight into the history of fashion but also helps us understand the progression of the ballerina's silhouette.
Oh! And remember, fashion doesn’t only exist on the stage! 1953 was also the year Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ took the world by storm! What a revolution it was, wasn’t it? Wider skirts, cinched waists, and an overall feminine appeal - think flowing gowns with intricate details that would perfectly complement a tulle underlayer. It's enough to inspire an entire wardrobe filled with dreamy frocks! I believe we have to be inspired by this bold approach and create our own beautiful silhouettes in modern fashion.
You know what they say: fashion goes in circles, and we just may see some incredible re-imagined vintage looks coming back into fashion.
Here’s the main takeaway for this #TutuTuesday
- The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II is a significant date for history, and of course, it involved the lovely art of fashion.
- We saw an evolution of tutu designs with their focus on lightweight elegance, matching perfectly the graceful movements of classical ballet.
- The emergence of 'New Look' further added a touch of elegance and romanticism, which translates beautifully into the delicate, fluid aesthetics of a tutu.
You see, the love of tutus transcends eras and resonates with an ageless appeal.
