#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 6430 - March 22nd 1955
Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your #TutuTuesday tour guide through the fascinating history of the most wonderful garment in the world, the ballet tutu! And let's face it, darling, where else would a girl be on a Tuesday than with her beloved tutus? This week, our time machine has whirled us back to March 22nd, 1955! Can you imagine, darling? The 50s!
I just love a good bit of time travel and what better excuse to have a delightful jaunt than for my #TutuTuesday history blog. Don't you agree?
Now, don't judge me on my bright pink tutu, but I have to say that 1955 is feeling rather drab when compared to my own glamorous world of shimmering silks, playful fabrics, and yes, even pink tulle. But I'm determined to find a bit of Tutu Sparkle hidden away in this year - because darling, the power of the tutu is timeless.
And if you fancy a good trip, you know what else is great? Train travel. It is always a joy to see the world passing by from a train window! I'm headed straight to London. Oh, what fabulous boutiques will I find, what theatrical delights? Why, the West End is bursting with spectacular shows just begging to be appreciated!
And who knows, maybe I can inspire a few of these fabulous people with a little touch of pink tulle - I hear a certain Queen is partial to some glamorous pink outfits and her fashion is just so bold!
Right, I am going to dive headfirst into London life and maybe even nab a quick ballet lesson with a leading choreographer, wouldn't that be fabulous?
So, while we explore 1955 together, darling, we shall start with what the date itself held. March 22nd, 1955? A grand day for... well... almost nothing. Seriously, history seems to have gone a bit quiet!
Fashion - oh darling! Imagine, the world is a bit less colourful than my beloved pink! It seems, a tad boring! Think demure little dresses in all the 'wrong' colours, no shocking pink for this year's fashion darlings! Let's see if I can bring some 'sparkle' to this year. The most fashionable fabric seems to be the one with lots of sequins and, wait for it, sparkly nylon!! They also have something called "Taffeta"... Sounds promising, wouldn't you agree? Of course, I will do my bit to change that and find some pretty fabric for my next creation!
And I must, must, buy some Dior. Imagine a Dior Tutu? I mean, how divine!
Dance Well, if we're in 1955, darling, it's got to be about ballet, especially since the Royal Ballet has only been established since 1946 and is bursting with excitement and, let's be honest, the best ballet dancers are still a bit older - maybe we should travel back another decade or two and go straight to a performance! What shall we watch today? Hmm! I do adore the romantic tutu with it's floaty lightness. It suits the classical repertoire of "Swan Lake," “Sleeping Beauty" or maybe "Giselle" but maybe we need a more romantic or passionate piece of choreography! The Nutcracker? Oh, the romantic twirls with a lovely pink tulle - and this year, I do fancy some twirls!! Of course, darling, I’ll write all about my theatrical discoveries.
Our tutu discovery for this week - while there are tutus on stage, we aren't really seeing the tutu become the central statement item that it has become today. Think the ballerinas have left out all the pretty tutus in their dressing room!!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a time machine to catch and some spectacular ballet shows to discover! Keep watching darling, this #TutuTuesday will be overflowing with vintage fashion inspiration.
I'm ready to whirl through time.
Ciao for now, darling!
