#TutuTuesday: A Twirl Back in Time! (Post #6583)
Hiya darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, and today, we're taking a twirl back in time, specifically to 25th February 1958. Buckle up, my lovelies, as we journey through the history of our beloved ballet tutus!
It's hard to believe, but the ballet tutu, the embodiment of grace and elegance, has only really been around for a couple of centuries. You wouldn't catch me twirling in one before that! And it wasn't always as whimsical as the frothy delights we adore today. Imagine! A world without tutus? Absolutely dreadful, darling!
Before we hop onto the historical carousel, a quick disclaimer โ travelling through time isn't always smooth sailing. Imagine trying to explain why you're wearing a pink tutu in the 1800s, "Well, darling, it's a #TutuTuesday tradition!"
The Romantic Period - 1800s: Imagine romanticism! There was so much swirling, and romanticism in the 1800s, particularly in ballet. But, you see, tutus were nowhere near as fluffy and frilly as they are today! Instead of our light, bouncy tutus, dancers wore these massive, full skirts made of a heavy material. Think of a bell with a lot of layers and fabric!
The first appearance of the 'tutu' was actually around the late 1830s with Maria Taglioni. She, being a fashion-forward sort of dancer, chopped down the big heavy skirt to what we'd call a 'knee-length' tutu, creating a lightweight and airy piece, just perfect for her stunning jumps. It allowed her to really move! Can you imagine, darling? My favourite dance, "La Sylphide," featuring one of these first "tutu's!" I travelled back to watch her dance, it was mesmerising!
Enter the 'Romantic' Tutu (and not that romantic!), It took around another twenty years or so for our fluffy tutus, or as the fashion folk called them, "The Romantic Tutu" (they couldn't resist calling them this), to come on the scene. In the 1850s, with dancers like the divine Carlotta Grisi, it was a huge hit. I swear it became a sensation! We can credit these dancers with starting the tutu craze, giving us these light, elegant tutus! Think 'Giselle' darling, and that iconic white tulle, the Romantic period's must-have look!
Time Travel Tip : To look fabulously retro-romantic, ditch those frills and go for a flowing, knee-length tutu. Bonus points for wearing a long white dress underneath to enhance the airiness! The best thing about these old tutus? They're comfy, darling!
February 25th, 1958: So, back to 25th February 1958. We are talking fabulous ballerina Maria Tallchief. Now, if you love ballet, my dear, then you need to watch "Firebird," as Maria is featured! I love to twirl along with her. Now, on that fateful 25th February, "Firebird" went to Moscow, it was a huge event for ballet fans. I don't think anyone has travelled with me, I was in my tutu by the station as the "Tutu Express" made its arrival and got ready for the journey. It's one of my favourite journeys to make!
Back to Today: So, you see, darling, even the world of tutus has a colourful, swirling history! My tip to my lovely readers today? Keep dancing! Even if it's just a little twirl in your living room, a "mini-me" style. And who knows? Maybe we can inspire a whole new trend for the tutu's of the future! Remember darling, no matter where your ballet journey takes you, always embrace the joy of dance. Remember the magic of twirling!
Until next Tuesday, dear readers!
Always yours in pink tutus,
Emma xoxo
