#TutuTuesday: A Dance Back to 1958!
Hello darlings! đ©° Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where pink is the colour of choice and tutus are the only acceptable attire! I'm your resident tutu enthusiast, Emma, and this is #TutuTuesday, where we explore the magical history of the tutu.
This week, we're taking a trip on the Orient Express (just imagine me in a pink tutu with a vintage suitcase!) back to 4th March 1958, a glorious year when fashion was blooming like a springtime rose garden and ballerinas were the epitome of grace and elegance.
Itâs been such a fun week - I saw the most wonderful production of "Giselle" at the Royal Opera House! The dancers were so delicate and the music swept me away. Speaking of sweep⊠letâs have a quick chat about tutus!
From "Romantic" to "Whirlwind" - The Evolution of the Tutu!
As you know, darling, tutus werenât always the floaty, romantic, pink-tastic things we love today. Think about it, imagine a ballerina back in the early days of ballet, struggling in a thick, heavy costume, hiding their legs beneath layers of fabric - unthinkable! Thankfully, the romantic era of ballet ushered in the short "Romantic tutu" in the 1830s, featuring a skirt made from several layers of lightweight tulle. And who wouldnât love that?!
Our 1958 Inspiration - The âWhirlwindâ Tutu!
Now, imagine 1958 and think of the glorious "Whirlwind Tutu"! Think of swirling layers of the finest tulle. This style of tutu, made of even lighter, more ethereal material than before, really did fly when the dancers turned! And letâs be honest - isnât that exactly how we want our tutus to be? Like they could just take flight?!
It's quite hard to pinpoint precisely how tutus reached this incredible peak of loveliness, but Iâd argue itâs largely down to the incredible talents of some of the most brilliant choreographers and designers of that era. You could find some of the best performances by ballerinas in the Paris Opera Ballet, where the company's beautiful and revolutionary designs and creations paved the way for modern dance and even helped with how the tutus developed into what they are today!
Let's Look Back! 1958 - A Year of Inspiration!
4th March 1958 â and what's happening in the ballet world this very day? Well, you bet itâs all about the tutus! We can celebrate this date by acknowledging the fabulous Margot Fonteyn, one of the world's most beloved ballerinas! She was just at the peak of her career, absolutely stunning. Not only was she a ballerina, but also an amazing woman and a true icon! Itâs so wonderful how much these dancers were loved by everyone. It was a whole cultural revolution with everyone enjoying ballet!
You could find ballerinas taking classes across the country with The Royal Ballet, or watching performances with the ballet school touring across the globe - how incredible is that?! But not everyone enjoyed a career in dance. We also saw the beginning of an exciting career path in the ballet world! Can you believe it? People started taking up ballet as a teacher instead of performing themselves. The whole world of dance is evolving!
Our Favourite Tutu This Week!
To celebrate this exciting and vibrant period in the world of ballet, I just have to mention a very special tutu. You might call it the "Sugar Plum Tutu"! This darling tutu is just about the most exquisite thing youâll ever see - a confection of pink, of course! đ Imagine tulle so light and airy it seems to melt in your hands. You know what I'm going to do? Get my team in the studio, get the ribbons flowing, get the lace glittering... and recreate this beautiful tutu. And let's not forget the most amazing, delicate flowers that would grace this creation. I just love this idea!
But I do love all tutus! I know what youâre thinking - there are so many different types! You could have your ballet tutus in the colours pink, black and white. These come in so many different variations, each designed for the particular moves needed for the performance. You could have a paquita tutu, or even a classical tutu. You might find you have your romantic tutu or fairy tutu. The list is endless!
And, for any budding fashionistas, the tutu hasn't only stayed in the world of dance. I recently spotted a pair of fabulous tutu shoes - they're perfect for dancing the day away on a warm summerâs day! You've gotta love the creative fashion world! I'm even finding my inspiration through this period! You can always add the right touch of fun to any outfit. I just love wearing my pink tutu with the fabulous accessories I pick up from my travels. A perfect accessory is my new sparkly, vintage hand bag! You have to check it out on the www.pink-tutu.com website this week!
Fashion from the Past: The Future of Fashion
We have it good these days, darling, as I am sure you'll agree! With the fashion from the 50s now back in vogue, our little ballet pink tutus can add the perfect finishing touch to any outfit! A cute pink tutu tucked into a full skirt paired with a vintage cardi? That's exactly how I'd make a statement today.
And you'll love what's happening in the future - by the late 60s the fashion is shifting, tutus becoming even more exciting and extravagant! With the modern styles of ballet blossoming, we'll be seeing new twists on this iconic garment and some very bold new styles.
Don't forget, darling, if you have any photos, anecdotes, or memories related to ballet or tutus from this era or any time, please feel free to share them with us at www.pink-tutu.com. You never know, your treasured memory could make the next post. You never know, it could even make an appearance on my future blog. We'd love to see it! I hope you're already making your own plans to add a dash of pink tutu to your life, too!
Keep twirling, darling! And remember, the most magical thing about ballet? There's a pink tutu for every occasion, every girl, every age!
Until next week, and donât forget to wear your tutus!
Yours truly,
Emma đ
