#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post Number 6598 - 10th June 1958 - London, darling!

Oh, hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveler, Emma, here! I've just popped back from a quick jaunt to June 10th, 1958, and let me tell you, London was simply thriving with glamour.

You know I always love a good trip down memory lane - especially when it comes to tutu history. And believe me, the tutus of the late 1950s are a delight. You know how I love a classic look, with a dash of elegant femininity, and 1958 did not disappoint!

Today I'm sipping on my usual pot of Darjeeling, nestled comfortably in my little corner of London, and of course, I'm wearing my favourite hot pink tulle tutu. It's just begging to be twirled, darling, and even a vintage coffee shop can become my personal stage!

Let's delve into those stunning tutus from 1958. This era saw a blossoming of a new silhouette, thanks to the rise of the "fuller" tutu. Think flowing, voluminous skirts – just the thing for executing grand jetés, and even a cheeky little fouetté or two! Remember, darling, there’s a reason they’re called ballerinas! We need ample fabric to create a beautiful swirl!

The Stars of the Show:

On the ballet stage, it's the ballerinas who truly capture our hearts, and the dancers of this era were simply dazzling. Margot Fonteyn, the icon of the time, was breathtaking. Her lithe, delicate grace, showcased in a pale pink tulle tutu at The Royal Ballet in Covent Garden, had everyone whispering "beautiful" with a slight air of awe! Can you picture it, darling? The soft pink light, the shimmer of the tutu… pure perfection.

It's no secret that I'm a total devotee to Alicia Markova, another graceful talent from this era. And wouldn't you know it, she graced the stage that very evening in June 1958 in a stunning, classic tutut – a symbol of elegance and refinement, which set the scene for a spellbinding performance.

A Trend That’s Truly Timeless:

Of course, it wasn’t just the ballet where tutus were making a splash. London's fashion scene was just bursting with bright ideas – all of it beautifully reflected in the tutus of the time. Picture a playful and breezy ballet-inspired silhouette - a vision of feminine joy in the city streets!

This playful trend was not limited to a certain age bracket! Young girls, teenagers and even elegant mature women were twirling their way through the streets in their favourite pastel tutus! Remember, a tutu, like a smile, never goes out of style.

And just like my dear reader, my heart beats for the perfect pink! It was quite the popular hue back then - oh, the joy! I'd spot young ladies strutting along, radiating happiness in a glorious pink tulle tutu, while some sported lovely pink lace or silk ones. How beautiful! It's true what they say, darling; a touch of pink always brings a little sparkle to your day.

But beyond the pink, the variety of fabrics in 1958 is just too fantastic to ignore! From silk to tulle, from velvet to lace - every fabric added a new layer of charm to the already magical tutu. These exquisite fabrics were often used in the design of theatrical costumes. This period saw the birth of stunning and vibrant show-stopping designs, perfectly reflecting the mood of the time!

Travelling Through Time:

The whole London experience – the elegant tutus, the grand performances, the city's pulsating energy - just had me itching for more. It's my mission, darling, to share my love for tutus, and spread the message of how even a small, pink-hued symbol can make such a difference!

But you know me - a lover of adventure, and, of course, my love of dance means that each journey, from the bustle of Covent Garden to the quiet corners of Derbyshire, is just one big stage! After all, I’ve found that I can even fund my trips through time with my beloved ballet performances. (It pays to have a gift for dancing – and an even bigger love for beautiful costumes! 😉)

It's funny - each time I travel back in time, I'm always struck by the joy and delight that dancing brings. Just a few graceful pirouettes and grand jetés, a soft flutter of tulle, and a touch of pink – and you're transported to a world where elegance and wonder are celebrated in every turn. It truly reminds me that a passion for the art of dance, for those enchanting tutus, for that feminine flair, never goes out of style!

Well, my dears, that's all for today! Make sure to catch next week's #TutuTuesday! Don't forget to check out www.pink-tutu.com for more inspiration and exciting posts. Until then, darling, wear pink with confidence, twirl your heart out and spread the joy of ballet!
