Tutu Tuesday #6599: Back to the 50s!

Hello my gorgeous ballet bunnies! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and it's time for another Tutu Tuesday! This week we're taking a trip down memory lane, all the way back to 1958, to uncover the fabulous world of tutus in the mid-century!

Before I step into the time machine, let me just say, oh darling, my vintage shopping haul last week was absolutely divine. I snagged a gorgeous pastel pink dress with a delicate floral print, perfect for my next ballet performance, and a pair of sparkly, stiletto heels, which will look positively divine on my next trip to London. It's all about the little details, isn't it? And a pink tutu just pulls it all together!

Now, onto our journey through time! Let's travel by train, wouldn't you say? It's just so chic and glamorous. Picture this: me, in a swishing pink tutu, sipping tea in a compartment, surrounded by the beautiful green English countryside. Dreams really do come true!

So, back to 1958. This was a year of innovation in the ballet world! The Royal Ballet was showcasing their extraordinary new production of 'The Sleeping Beauty,' choreographed by the brilliant Frederick Ashton. The sets were breathtakingly elaborate, with swirling gowns and shimmering tutus that would leave you speechless. Imagine the excitement! Ballet was taking centre stage, and I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

However, 1958 was not only about grand ballet. It was also a time for emerging talents like Margot Fonteyn, considered a ballerina extraordinaire, and Rudolf Nureyev, the revolutionary dancer from Russia who swept the world off its feet with his dazzling talent. Their graceful moves and enchanting performances captivated audiences worldwide, reminding everyone why ballet is truly an art form like no other. And can we talk about the outfits?! Stunning tutus paired with the most delicate jewellery and stylish hair. Perfection!

Tutu trends were evolving during this time, becoming more form-fitting and streamlined, offering ballerinas more freedom to move. Imagine being able to leap, pirouette and twirl with absolute grace in a beautiful tutu that felt like a second skin! That's what the era was about. Effortless beauty and freedom in every move. And that's a style we should embrace today, my lovelies.

For me, 1958 embodies a sense of timeless elegance that truly speaks to my heart. I adore the simplicity and femininity of this era, which is beautifully reflected in their fashion sense. It’s classic, it's timeless, and it's inspiring!

Speaking of timeless, let's take a quick peek at what the fashionable set were wearing in 1958. Full skirts and cinched waists reigned supreme. The iconic New Look by Dior was still going strong, emphasizing the feminine form. But my absolute favourite look was the iconic poodle skirt! It was perfect for a little spin on the dance floor or a fun day at the local fair. And I would absolutely love to get my hands on a vintage poodle skirt for my next ballet recital. Don't you think it would be fabulous with a pink tutu?!

Of course, the '50s weren't just about skirts! Let’s not forget the elegance of cardigans, crisp blouses and bold colours like emerald green, cobalt blue and vibrant red! All so chic and flattering on every figure, especially when paired with a classic black ballerina flat. Oh, to be a young, fashionable lady in 1958!

But let’s face it, there was one colour that really took centre stage – PINK! The beautiful pastel shades, like rose, flamingo and candy pink, were absolute staples in every fashionable lady's wardrobe! Imagine, this gorgeous pink dress paired with a soft pink tutu! A match made in heaven! And, don't forget the pink hats, pink gloves, and of course, pink handbags! Now that’s a look that speaks to my very soul.

In fact, did you know, pink has always been linked to ballet and tutus, going back centuries? It symbolises innocence, grace and femininity - qualities synonymous with ballet! So, what are we waiting for, dear ladies? Let's embrace the pink! Pink is power, pink is strength, and pink is absolutely stunning!

And now, for a little sartorial inspiration for your next ballet adventure:

  • For the classically stylish: A delicate, pale pink tutu with a fitted, off-the-shoulder top in a classic black, white or grey. Remember those ballerina flats I mentioned? A pair in white, black or a subtle pastel colour will perfectly complement the look. And don’t forget those sparkly heels! They’ll make you shine on and off the stage!

  • For the bold ballerina: A vibrantly coloured tutu, perhaps a striking red or emerald green, with a white, classic T-shirt or a silky black tank top. Let the tutu be the star! Throw in some chunky silver jewellery for extra drama!

  • For the playful princess: A tutu with a fun pattern, like polka dots or stripes! Combine it with a bright coloured top with a playful, feminine feel and a pair of adorable flats with a floral design. Remember, tutus are not just for ballet, they're for everyday life too! Why not pair it with a cute outfit for your next shopping trip?

But before you get carried away, dear readers, it’s time to bid adieu for now. It’s time to set my sights on another historical adventure! I'm eager to find out how ballet trends have changed throughout the ages, and to share them with you on our future Tutu Tuesday adventures. Until next week, stay beautiful, keep dancing, and never be afraid to embrace the pink!
