Tutu Tuesday #6641: A Blast From the Past! (1959-04-07)

Hey Tutu Twirlers! 👋 Emma here, your pink-loving, tutu-obsessed time-traveling blogger, back again with another #TutuTuesday post. Today we’re going on a thrilling trip back to the glorious year 1959, and what a fabulously fashionable time it was!

Now, let's talk tutus. The year 1959 was all about romantic, classic ballet looks, so imagine swirly tulle, airy chiffon, and the most elegant colours imaginable. You'll find delicate pastel shades like baby pink and mint green, and even bold bursts of scarlet and navy blue. But my absolute favourite is, you guessed it, a magnificent pink. 🎀

What was happening in the world of ballet on 7th April 1959? Well, the Royal Ballet were wowing audiences in London with their incredible performance of “The Sleeping Beauty”, and over in New York City, the New York City Ballet were dazzling audiences with "The Firebird". This was a time when ballets like Swan Lake, Giselle and Coppelia were absolute staples, with all their breathtakingly beautiful costumes and tutus, of course.

Did you know that in the 1950s, ballerinas weren't confined to just ballet studios and stages? They graced the pages of fashion magazines, influencing designers and trends. Think ballerina flats, full skirts, and even that fabulous high-ponytail look, all inspired by the elegant silhouettes of the ballet world. 🩰

Imagine it: You're out shopping for a new dress in a vibrant boutique in 1959, the latest Vogue magazine with a ballerina on the cover is on display, and you see a tutu adorning the mannequin! It's like ballet is everywhere you look. Just like that, you’re transported back in time, surrounded by the most elegant outfits imaginable, and you're ready to embrace that chic 1950s style. 💖

So let’s delve a little deeper into those beautiful tutus. If you’re picturing a ballerina in 1959, the image probably includes a gorgeous full tutu in tulle. These tutus weren't the kind you might see in contemporary ballet, all stark and minimalist – no, no, no! We're talking fluffy, delicate, layers and layers of the most stunning tulle imaginable.

Can you just imagine yourself twirling around in a vintage ballet class in the most beautiful pink tulle tutu? Just the image alone is enough to make me giddy with excitement.

Now, as a time-traveling ballet fanatic, I have to tell you that the absolute best way to experience this era is through the train, of course. I love taking the train to exciting new cities, watching the countryside roll by, dreaming up new tutu ideas, and of course, getting all my latest inspiration for my next ballet performance. There is something utterly charming about riding on a train, even if it’s not one with a glamorous vintage-style carriage (though those would be incredible!).

But the very best way to embrace a time period, any time period, is by throwing yourself into it! 💃

I'll leave you with some outfit inspiration: imagine a cute little pink dress with a cute little peter pan collar, a matching pink cardigan and, of course, a fabulously full pink tulle tutu to twirl in. A little beret on your head to complete the look? Fabulous! Now that’s what I call timeless chic!

Stay tuned, tutu-twirlers, because next week I'm taking you on another extraordinary journey through the fascinating history of the tutu! Until then, keep on twirling, and remember: you’re always fabulous in a tutu! ✨

Love,

Emma www.pink-tutu.com
