#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Blast from the Past, 14th April 1959!
Hello, darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where pink tutus reign supreme! Today we're whisking back in time, all the way to the 14th of April, 1959. As usual, I've popped on my best pink tutu and a cheeky little hat, ready to sprinkle some magic over the world of ballet history!
Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, 1959? Wasn't that a bit before your time?" And you'd be absolutely right, my dear. But that's where my favourite thing in the world comes in handy: my secret time-travelling suitcase!
Honestly, the trains are the most civilised way to go - much better than that frightful flying contraption. And the scenery? Utterly delightful. I do have to wear my finest fur coat on these excursions, of course. The time travel gets a little chilly sometimes, and the glamour? Oh darling, I couldn't leave the elegance behind.
Anyway, where was I? Ah, yes! 14th of April, 1959. Well, darling, let me tell you - things were quite the scene back then! Now, let's rewind for a moment, shall we? Back when ballet was more about precision and tradition than, well, all the glittery chaos we see today.
We were in Paris, that glorious, romantic, breathtaking city that is, after all, the capital of ballet. Imagine, darlings! You've got to see it with your own eyes - the Parisian streets buzzing with life and energy. It's no wonder we Brits like to hop across the channel so often for a peek at this fabulous lifestyle!
Now, darling, the big news of this date? It's a ballet premiere. You just cannot miss a ballet premiere - the drama, the grandeur, the energy. Oh, it just lifts my heart. On this glorious day, we saw a new performance by the incomparable Rudolf Nureyev - a rising star in the world of dance, the man of the moment! Can you believe? It’s amazing what this ballet world has produced since then. He danced with his own partner, Margot Fonteyn. Her elegance, it was like the swans of the lake themselves. Simply dazzling. The choreography, my dear, was breathtaking. And can we talk about the costumes? You should see the gowns. Think sequins, think silk, think feathers... The whole lot, darling. It's just heavenly!
*Talking about the costumes! Let's dive into those, shall we? * In 1959, we were in the midst of some pretty amazing changes. Ballet tutus were still in the classic form, but starting to blossom. The short tutu, you know, that one-piece design we adore so much now? It was starting to take off! The ballerinas, darling, looked like sugar plum fairies in a burst of light! Now, it was mostly for a delicate ballerina body, but we know those beautiful dresses would soon have their full, magnificent, elegant transformation.
And the colour, my darlings? Well, 1959 was a time for pretty colours, particularly in ballet. The pinks, the pale blues, the whites - a symphony of graceful pastel tones that simply radiated a romantic charm. So we're seeing all sorts of exciting changes in this golden age.
As I do, darling, with the tutu. Oh! I simply adore them! And I was a big fan of how it made everything feel a little bit more… elegant! They’re a little less modern these days, don’t you think? We must do our best to see that the tutu never disappears, shall we, darlings? They make everything more graceful, more chic. More ballet-worthy!
Speaking of which... I must confess I took a trip to the beautiful, fabulous, simply glorious shops in the most fabulous of shopping havens, Paris, darling, where they have clothes like nothing you've ever seen before. Oh, the gowns and the skirts and the hats! If there's one thing I can tell you, shopping for outfits is absolutely essential! I’ll give you more information on my fashion blog next week - www.pinkshop.com. There's a special offer if you read this post first, darlings!
You know, it’s just such a magical place for inspiration. They really love fashion. Just like me!
So that’s all for today darlings. Have a wonderful Tuesday and do keep a watchful eye out for your very own #PinkTutuMoment. I’m on Instagram! #pinktutu
Until next Tuesday,
Emma xx
