Tutu Tuesday #6660: The Rise of the Romantic Tutu!

Hey lovelies!

It's Emma here, your tutu-obsessed time traveler, ready to take you on another trip down memory lane, specifically to August 18th, 1959! Can you imagine?

Fashion Forecast: Romantic Revolution

This time, I'm swapping my pink tulle for a more traditional romantic tutu – imagine pale blush silk and delicate tulle, swirling and shimmering like a fairy tale! That's because 1959 was the year the Romantic tutu really blossomed! Think ballerina wafting through the air, showcasing that feminine grace that made tutus a symbol of grace and artistry.

Speaking of grace and artistry, it was around this time that a new generation of ballerinas started emerging, like Rudolf Nureyev! Just a few months earlier, this amazing dancer had defected from the Soviet Union, and his breathtaking talent shook the ballet world! It was the perfect time for the Romantic tutu to shine, and you better believe it was turning heads in every ballet theatre across Europe.

Paris Fashion

My dear readers, you know I love nothing more than a trip to the French capital, and this day is no different! My trip to Paris this August, you know, the original Fashion Week, was filled with glamorous parties and a sprinkle of high society. It’s not just the ballet where the Romantic tutu is in full swing. Imagine walking down the Champs-Élysées in Paris, spotting stylish ladies in pastel frocks with full skirts - very reminiscent of the ballerina tutus on stage. This look? Effortlessly chic, don’t you think?

A Tutu for Every Occasion

The 1950s were a truly glorious time for tutu enthusiasts, even off-stage! These lovely lightweight tutus weren’t just for the stage anymore! They started appearing everywhere! I’m talking garden parties, formal dinners, and even some elegant tea dances! A pretty tulle skirt can totally make a statement - it's elegant, timeless, and perfect for swirling, dancing, and dreaming!

Oh! On a More Personal Note…

While we're on the subject of dreamy evenings, this time around I’m travelling in a little more comfort than a first class compartment - you see, my grandmum used to tell me about travelling across Europe to the continent, the smell of woodsmoke from the coal engine, and being able to open the window just slightly. I was so excited about it all. Not the grime and smoke, I just imagined a slightly open window - maybe in summer… but no… the wind just swept across the train in that unforgiving cold you can't ever really warm up from! Oh! You can bet the new train was like being on an air liner - all warmth and light!

I'm heading to Switzerland - what better place to celebrate the graceful tutu! My favourite part? It's a beautiful place, but you see it's where the best ballet shoe shop in the whole of Europe - or so my dear grandmother told me! She did make a joke that it's probably just her favourite shop because it was so well-known - a lot of ballet schools visited from around the world and ordered pointe shoes from here. She always wanted me to be a dancer, of course - what Derbyshire girl wouldn't want that!

Anyway, the train ride was a lovely part of my journey - the shops on either side were just a whirl of delicious things! Oh, how I wish they made little shops in every compartment so I could bring a touch of that little boutique luxury and glamour along on every train ride with me. There’s an idea, a pop-up style boutique right there!

I’ll be sure to pop in a couple of lovely stores. That reminds me - fashion update my latest discovery this trip is these darling brooches you know the little jewelled ones. I find myself pinning them onto my tulle - I bet you would, too! It's another delightful detail to take our little bit of romantic style to the next level, darling.

I’m definitely trying out a few on my newest tulle – It’s pale lavender – that reminds me – I need to get the colour chart - you’ll see on my next blog, I need your ideas!

But until next week, lovely darlings, keep twirling and remember, every day can be a little bit glamorous with the right pink tutu.

Don't forget to leave me a comment below about your favourite moments from ballet history and, of course, any gorgeous tutus you've been spotting lately!

With love,

Emma
