#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 10th November 1959 - Post Number 6672
Greetings, darlings!
Emma here, your pink tutu-loving, time-travelling ballerina blogger, and welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! Today, I'm taking us back to the wonderful world of tutus, those wispy masterpieces of fabric and femininity, on a chilly November day in 1959!
This week, I find myself in Paris, the very heart of the fashion world and a haven for balletomanes. Oh, how I do love the city of lights! There's simply nothing more exhilarating than catching a show at the Opéra Garnier. Imagine, stepping into that glorious theatre, a glittering gem nestled in the heart of the city, the air buzzing with anticipation, and the plush red velvet seats promising an evening of magic!
But back to our tutu journey...
In 1959, the tutu was in its golden age, a glorious bloom of creativity and expression. We've seen the rise and fall of styles over the centuries, from the classic Romantic tutu, its frills billowing around the dancer's ankles, to the sleek tutu à la Française, its layers creating a smooth, graceful line.
Now, in the late 50s, a new silhouette was sweeping the world of ballet. We're seeing a blend of tradition and innovation, and a move towards the modern tutu, shorter and more dynamic, highlighting the dancer's every move. The designers of this era, visionaries like Christian Dior and Balenciaga, were revolutionising fashion, and their influence can definitely be felt in the world of ballet! Imagine Margot Fonteyn swirling across the stage, her tutu shimmering with a captivating elegance!
But don't be fooled, dear readers, tradition still reigns in ballet. The iconic tutus of the past, those glorious, flowing clouds of tulle, remain indispensable, forever a reminder of the art's rich history. Imagine, the ballerinas of the Romantic era gliding across the stage, those delicate white tutus almost melting into the shimmering stage lights...
I am, of course, absolutely delighted with this contemporary ballet scene. But there's something particularly romantic about those billowing tutus, those ethereal, swirling shapes that take you straight to the heart of a fairytale. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't say no to a lovely pink tutu à la Française, just imagine the elegance and flair!
While we're lost in this world of tulle and grace, I mustn't forget what we're celebrating this #TutuTuesday!
November 10th, 1959, brought a very special event, one that sparked my fascination with time travel!
Today is the anniversary of a legendary ballet performance. I'm not sure what show it was yet - I have a sneaking suspicion it involved an ethereal tutu à la Française. But I am in Paris! I plan on venturing to the Opéra Garnier later today. Perhaps I'll be lucky enough to find some vintage fashion magazines, a delightful relic from this elegant era.
Now, dear readers, before I start my search for that magical tutu and a fabulous vintage magazine, I must encourage you to indulge your inner ballerina, even if you haven't been on the stage in a while.
What about a little 'Tutu Tuesday' fun? Let me know what you're doing to embrace your love of the tutu this week. Have you planned a special ballet-inspired outfit? Will you be attending a performance, a class, or maybe even trying out your favourite twirl?
And remember, if you want to wear pink, just wear it! The world needs more pink! It makes us feel good, and a little bit special. And who can resist a twirl in a pretty pink tutu?
Until next week, happy tutuing, and stay fabulously feminine!
**Yours, always,
Emma x**
