#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - November 17th, 1959

Welcome back, darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, back with another delve into the glorious history of our beloved ballet tutus! This week, we're time-travelling back to November 17th, 1959, a date brimming with ballet brilliance, fashion delights, and enough pink to make your heart sing!

Now, you might be wondering, "Emma, why are we travelling back to 1959?" Well, my dears, that's the year that the absolutely breathtaking ballet, Giselle, graced the stage of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! **And believe me, this was an event not to be missed! The very first time I witnessed this performance in the flesh, I was completely swept off my feet! The choreography, the costumes, the emotions - it was simply captivating.

Imagine this, my sweethearts: Giselle is a story of love, betrayal, and a heartbreaking tragedy. The story of the ethereal and graceful Giselle, a peasant girl who falls head over heels for a disguised Duke, Albrecht, who deceives her into thinking he's a lowly peasant. This story resonates with audiences because of its timeless themes, its powerful characters, and the captivating choreography, of course! It truly showcased the versatility and expressive range of ballet.

I don't know about you, but I just adore the sheer elegance and romance of this era! Those fluffy tutus, flowing fabrics, and intricate patterns; they speak of grace, poise, and pure femininity! Think about it, my lovelies, tutus in this period were designed to showcase the graceful movements and athleticism of ballerinas. And speaking of tutus, you simply had to be there to see the amazing costumes of Giselle itself! The exquisite detail of the tutus with the sheer fabric and flowing trains, the intricate floral embroidery and those sparkling embellishments that literally glimmered under the stage lights. Imagine a tutu the colour of a crisp autumn leaf - gorgeous, right?

But you know me, darlings, my love of tutus isn't just for the stage! My wardrobe overflows with an eclectic array of tutus - all the different colours, textures, and lengths imaginable! Pink, obviously! Thatโ€™s my absolute favourite. But you know what? A bit of red or even a dash of bold orange adds that special sparkle and excitement to your ensemble. Sometimes a hint of gold just takes it all to the next level! *And I just adore the way a well-chosen tutu adds an element of fun and playfulness to any outfit. * Why not try wearing a tutu to your next party?

Speaking of parties, oh, those magnificent after-ballet balls! I remember the time when I first travelled back to this period, and the after-show soirees at the Opera House in London were just fabulous. The music was lively, the air was abuzz with conversation, and, naturally, there was an abundance of dazzling tutus, from classic white and airy tulle to bolder colours and textures, creating a veritable symphony of style. It was a real taste of 1950s glamour!

Now, I always feel a twinge of sadness as I watch those final curtain calls and return to the present, back to Derbyshire. The memories linger though; a magical journey through time. * I especially cherish these travels and moments like witnessing a production of *Giselle , the spectacle, the talent and passion, and the joy that shines through. **

Now, tell me, darlings, what was your favourite ballet production this year? And don't forget to show me your tutu style! I'd love to see how you all rock your tutus and make this a fabulous #TutuTuesday! **

* Remember, my dearest lovelies, life is always a bit more exciting with a little tutu magic! And always, always remember to * keep it pink and fabulous** !

*Until next Tuesday, my darlings! *
