#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 6th September 1960 (Post #6715)
Hello my darling tutus! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling blogger, Emma, here, back again with another dose of #TutuTuesday.
Oh my, you won’t believe what an absolutely divine trip I’ve just had! This week, I found myself right in the heart of Paris – the City of Lights and, of course, the epicentre of all things chic and fashionably fabulous! This is the place where my pink tutu feels most at home, you know? And trust me, darling, this week didn't disappoint.
So, where was I in 1960? I’ll tell you! My trip started with the most delightful train ride – I just adore those vintage carriages, all plush velvet seats and gentle rocking, so glamorous. Then, I strolled down the cobbled streets, mesmerized by the Parisian fashion. My eyes popped at every window – stunning designs, vibrant colours, and the most fantastic hats I’ve ever seen! My goodness, darling, how I long to try them all on. Imagine a pink tutu paired with a chic cloche hat, adorned with feathers – perfection, wouldn't you say?
But today’s #TutuTuesday is all about the ballet, darling. The reason I came to Paris wasn’t just for the shopping – although, honestly, that's a big part of the fun – but to witness something truly special.
On the 6th of September, 1960, the Palais Garnier hosted the opening night of the Ballet de l’Opéra performance of "Giselle". You wouldn't believe the buzz in the air! The grandeur of the building itself, those grand staircases and the stunning architecture, just stole my breath away. Then, there were the beautiful gowns the women wore, and the dapper gentlemen in their tuxedos, a sight that wouldn't be out of place in a fairytale.
I felt so excited to witness this magnificent performance!
"Giselle", darling, is such a classic tale of love, betrayal, and the mystical realm of the Wilis. I absolutely adored watching the choreography; every twirl, every leap, every delicate pas de bourrée was breathtaking! I couldn’t resist getting a programme to note all the details, from the name of the choreographers to the incredible costuming. You wouldn’t believe the detail, darling, they even had specially made tutus for the Wilis, all sparkling white with those delicate feather wings.
Now, as a pink tutu enthusiast, I must admit that the white tutus of the Wilis stole my heart for the night. The white seemed so innocent, like a beautiful winter dream, while the pink tutu would certainly be too much, you see. It reminded me of how tutus have evolved over the centuries – from their early origins in the Romantic Era, where they were seen as an ethereal and symbolic garment, to today where they can be truly vibrant and diverse.
The evening was truly magical, the whole audience erupted into applause after every act! And the energy of the performers was infectious. It’s no wonder ballet holds such a special place in hearts across the globe. It’s an art form that transcends language, expressing universal emotions through elegant movement.
Oh, darling, this brings me to an important point. You see, when it comes to ballet, I truly believe everyone deserves to experience the magic, whether it’s watching a live performance or taking a dance class! Ballet is a joy that everyone can embrace.
So, here’s my little mission: every week, I’m going to share a bit of tutu history with you all. That’s what #TutuTuesday is all about - delving into the past of these glorious creations, discovering where they came from and why we adore them.
Speaking of tutus, dear readers, have you tried any new steps this week? Did you find a lovely, new pair of dance shoes? Did you find that perfect pink tutu at a local store or perhaps online? If you are feeling truly bold, maybe even wear your tutu out and about today! It’s so much fun, darling!
Until next week, my lovely readers! Let's make every day a #TutuTuesday!
With love and pink tutus,
Emma
