#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 6773 - 17th October 1961!
Hello, my dearest Tutu Tribe! It's Emma, your resident time-traveling ballerina, back with another blast from the past for your weekly dose of Tutu Tuesday history!
This week we're heading back to the glamorous 17th of October, 1961. Imagine, darling, the fashion! The hairstyles! And of course, the tututus. You just wouldn't believe the magnificent styles of the era.
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Emma, it's only the sixties! Isn't it a bit early for tutus?" Well, my sweet, the tutus were always around, you just weren't aware of their hidden magic. But let me tell you, this particular time was a truly whirlwind for tutus!
Stepping Back into a Magical Era
Just imagine a crisp autumn evening. London's streets are aglow with the orange glow of streetlamps and the twinkling lights of theatre marquees. I've just disembarked from the train, the whistle still echoing in my ears, and I'm rushing to the Royal Opera House. I'm wearing a fluffy pink tutu, naturally - it's the most delightful way to celebrate the sheer joy of dance!
Inside, the theatre is abuzz with excited chatter. Elegant women in stunning evening dresses and dapper gentlemen in suits mingle amidst the sparkling chandeliers. Tonight's the opening night of Giselle, one of the absolute must-see classics. And my, are you in for a treat!
Ballet Under the Spotlight
As the curtain rises, the drama begins! Giselle, a young country girl who falls deeply in love with a disguised duke, weaves a story of love, deceit, and heartbreak. And of course, the ballerinas are phenomenal! I must say, I'm incredibly impressed by the grace and precision of the ballerinas. Those tutus swish and twirl with such elegance - just imagine the countless hours of practice it took to achieve this kind of brilliance!
Tututology: The Romance of a Romantic Tutu
As you can imagine, tutus have undergone a bit of a metamorphosis over the years, but the romantic allure has always been present. In 1961, you would have seen ballerina tutus with classic romantic tulle layers - often longer and flowier than the modern "short and sweet" variety. These tutus, especially during Giselle's mad scene are breathtaking! Their movement, the sheer weightless beauty of the tulle… simply exquisite!
I know it's easy to forget that tutus weren't always so easily accessible, especially for aspiring young ballerinas! Imagine, no easy trips to ballet stores, no endless selection of online retailers, no pink tutu obsession blogs! For young girls back then, finding a tutu was an adventure, an exciting pursuit of dreams.
Time Traveling Through Fashion:
Let's dive a little into the fashion scene, darling! The era is known for its chic simplicity. Think sleek shift dresses, fitted suits, and oh my, that hair!. Those sleek, perfect beehives - my personal favorite are the ones adorned with beautiful ribbons and sparkly hair combs. A timeless classic for a true ballerina!
Speaking of classic looks, it’s a bit of a fashion paradox that even as fashion was embracing modernity, there was a certain love affair with ballet that permeated all areas of the world! This fascination with ballet pushed the tutu further into mainstream popularity. From chic city streets to theatre sets, the elegant twirl of the tutu remained an emblem of the grace and sophistication of the era.
Finding Inspiration in History:
My little lovelies, this isn't just about fashion! This trip back in time has shown me the power of the tutu! The history of ballet is full of extraordinary stories about perseverance, passion, and self-expression. Just like the tutu has gone through several reinventions throughout time, it always seems to embody the very essence of that time period. So, it only makes sense to wear our tutus with that spirit in mind - to celebrate ourselves, our journeys, and our dreams.
So there you have it, another journey into the #TutuTuesday world! If you’re keen on reading more about this era, pop by your local library for books on the history of ballet - there are some really sparkling reads!
Until next week, my sweet tutu tribe! Remember, there's a ballerina inside each of you, ready to twirl!
Yours in pink, Emma
