#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1961-10-24
Post Number: 6774
Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to all things tutu! Today's #TutuTuesday takes us right back to the oh-so-glamorous era of the 1960s, landing us squarely on 24th October 1961. Can you imagine? A whole year before the Beatles exploded onto the scene!
Oh, it was an exciting time for ballet. As a proper ballerina who time-travels when sheâs not dancing or blogging, I find these dates fascinating! This time Iâm hopping over to London, as it's where the ballet scene is really buzzing at the moment.
Firstly, the Royal Ballet is still going strong. Imagine, dear readers, a time when they were only called the "Sadler's Wells Ballet." That doesnât quite have the same elegant ring to it, does it? Their repertoire back then included everything from the timeless classics like Swan Lake and Giselle to some brand-new productions. A couple of the dancers I adore are making their debut around this time, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev - it's a real golden age!
Now, letâs talk about fashion, shall we? It wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a dash of style, darling. And what a year for fashion! The "New Look" is still having its moment, all cinched waists and voluminous skirts. Think Audrey Hepburn in âBreakfast at Tiffanyâsâ, except, instead of the iconic black dress, picture it in pink. Why? Because a girl from Derbyshire needs all the pink in her life. It's an ideal, oh so wonderfully feminine and elegant silhouette - perfect for showcasing a perfectly constructed tutu! And yes, a perfectly constructed tutu, is something you need to see and hear with your own eyes, right? That soft, whispery swish of a tutu made of the most delicate fabrics - it just fills you with so much joy.
This particular Tuesday in 1961 happens to be the anniversary of a rather wonderful event. The legendary Royal Ballet has been gracing Londonâs stage for just over 25 years and everyone, including the Queen herself, is getting dressed up for a magnificent gala performance. Honestly, wouldnât you know it, a fabulous pink dress, with a beautifully delicate layer of tulle, was just what I was going to wear to see that performance. So fabulous!
Can you imagine? 1961! Think of the world that's waiting to be explored in this magical year. It was a time of immense change and upheaval, but even amid it all, there was this shared love for dance, this fascination with beauty, that transcends everything. That is why my darling, ballet remains relevant even today. We all need beauty and grace in our lives. Thatâs why my tutu obsession isnât fading! I have found that, no matter what age you are, what you wear, how long youâve lived, thereâs a child in all of us, that just wants to put on a tutu and dance! I say go for it! Wear it proudly, darling, for you deserve to have all the fun in the world. And who knows, maybe someday soon we can both go see a show at the Royal Opera House, in London together. It would be just the most magical night, and maybe weâll even see a few dancers wear the same tutus we love here today!
Until next #TutuTuesday, wear your own tutu proudly! Keep twirling, keep sparkling, and don't forget to always believe in your own happy endings. And do check back next Tuesday for another adventure through tutu time!
Now, if youâll excuse me, darling, I have a date with a hot pink sequined tutu in the shop - just because!
See you soon,
Emma
