#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 27th November 1962 - Post 6831!

Hello my lovelies! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here, and welcome to another glorious #TutuTuesday! Today, we're twirling back to 27th November 1962 - a date brimming with exciting ballet news! Oh, and by the way, has anyone else noticed how November seems to just whizz by?! Where did the last few weeks disappear to? It's certainly given me very little time to squeeze in all my shopping and ballet classes! 🩰🛍️

But I digress, as usual! Anyway, back to the time machine... So, where were we in 1962? Well, let's just say, ballet was definitely having a moment! Just this past weekend, I popped along to see "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Oh my goodness, what a performance! The dancers were so elegant, so strong - it simply blew me away. And those costumes - divine! The fairies flitted around the stage in those delicate, pastel-coloured tutus, so floaty and dream-like, just as a fairy's dress should be. 🥰 And the whole thing was just… magical. It made me want to pack up my bags and run off to join the ballet, even though I do have a confession to make - I'm rather terrified of pointe shoes! 😱

But you know me, I can’t go anywhere without picking up a new ballet-related item, even if I have to buy it for myself! Today's find? The most darling little pink ballet bag, absolutely perfect for carrying my ballet shoes, my lunch (donuts from that adorable little bakery next to the theatre are a must!), and even a spare tutu (you never know when you'll need an outfit change!). Now, how do you like that for fashion? The pink matches my tutu perfectly, and the sparkly silver studs - oh my, it's practically irresistible!

Speaking of irresistible, let’s talk about this glorious date in ballet history. I’m just back from my shopping spree at Liberty's and I spotted a lovely, vibrant new shade of pink satin on sale! It would look stunning in a tutu, wouldn’t it? This gorgeous pink is so wonderfully bright and alive – perfect for capturing the energy and joy of dance! 💃 It’s not all frills and glitter in the world of dance, however, as you know! But even the gruelling practice is brightened up with this dazzling, almost neon pink, in my humble opinion, it is the epitome of graceful style!

Let's also spare a moment to appreciate some iconic ballerinas of the day. I’m a massive fan of the amazing Margot Fonteyn, you just can’t beat her! The grace and power she exuded on stage, it just blew me away, truly inspiring. And how she used those beautiful, swirling, full tutus, such artistry!

Now, you know me, I love all things pretty, but sometimes we need a touch of drama, too, and that is what you're getting from me. For those of you who fancy a bit more ‘edge’ in your tutus, take inspiration from Rudolf Nureyev, who was quite a revolutionary figure. I loved how he played with the lines of a tutu – making it short and sharp, and almost as though it was a masculine piece of dancewear! Just wait, though, for my next #TutuTuesday! Next week, I’m taking a journey through some groundbreaking and unexpected designs for tutus. From tutus with pockets to those with unique shapes and forms, ballet costumes have undergone an evolution unlike anything you’ve ever seen. So get those dancing shoes on, ladies, and we will get you twirling your way into history!

Now, as the day starts to turn, I am going to whip up a pot of delicious hot cocoa, grab a comfy seat by the fire and delve into some new ballet books. After all, it’s all about relaxation, comfort, and beauty, isn't it? And that is what the life of a ballerina is all about, right? You have a good day now, you darling tutus, and until next Tuesday - happy twirling! ✨
