Tutu Tuesday #6869: Back to the Swinging Sixties! 🩰💖

Hello my darling Tutu Twirlers! It’s Emma here, your pink-loving, tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballet enthusiast, and it’s Tutu Tuesday again! Today, we’re waltzing back to August 20th, 1963, a time when London was swinging with new styles and the world was buzzing with excitement.

Imagine a London brimming with excitement – think of all those fabulously chic ladies in their Carnaby Street-inspired outfits, their hair perfectly coiffed, a little bit of Twiggy about them. And wouldn’t you know it, even way back then, tutus were a big deal! 💖

You wouldn’t find them on the streets (although wouldn’t that be fun? 😜) but onstage, at London's iconic Royal Opera House, it was a whirlwind of twirls and leaps in classic productions. They were bringing the likes of "Swan Lake" and "The Sleeping Beauty" to life, with all their romantic elegance. Ballet, back then, was the epitome of sophistication, a real "must-see" for the social elite.

Think for a moment, my lovely dancers, how it must have felt to sit amongst those swanky audiences! The ladies in their stunning ball gowns, the men in their smart suits, all with their noses in the programme. It was like a magical evening out! I can just imagine the whispers of admiration as a prima ballerina took her final curtsy, her tutu glittering under the stage lights.

Speaking of the Royal Opera House, August 20th, 1963, was a big night! They had a very special treat in store. The "Don Juan" ballet, based on Mozart’s opera, was performing that very evening! Can you picture it, my sweet Tutu Twirlers, all the gorgeous sets, the costumes, the amazing music… it must have been truly sensational!

And here’s a bit of fun: Remember how the 60s were all about bold prints and psychedelic colours? Well, those bold colours also started to influence ballet costumes! Gone were the days of only classic black and white, we were starting to see some fabulous pops of colour, all thanks to fashion’s new-found vibrancy! So, in that way, you can say the 60s played a part in how we dress our tutu today!

A Little Trip Down Memory Lane

Let's fast forward to 1963 for a little "what's trending" rundown. Remember the mini skirt, my darlings? This fabulous piece was ALL the rage back then! Remember how that sparked a fashion revolution? I truly believe tutus could bring a similar revolution to the streets of our world! 💖

Remember how it felt to go shopping with your mum, that thrill of finding a new dress, a perfect pair of shoes? I just love seeing those beautifully styled magazines with their vibrant photos of all the latest fashion trends – they really give us a window into the past and its spirit. That sense of excitement for new clothes was totally what the 1960s were all about, a celebration of individuality and boldness! It's amazing to think that the styles of the 60s still have that "je ne sais quoi" today! It's so chic! And the styles haven’t disappeared – that sense of daring, that desire to express yourself - that's something we still share today.

And if you want to truly feel like you're back in the 60s, step onto a train and travel to London, my darlings! Remember the excitement of journeys, the clicking of wheels on the rails, the bustling of the train stations? Imagine the stories behind those travelling to London from all across Britain - that sense of possibility, the feeling of heading for something exciting.

But my darlings, this blog isn't just about fashion. It's about the beauty of ballet. It's about the artistry of movement, the poetry of every pose, the captivating music, the raw passion. It's a feeling, a connection to a magical world.

So remember, as you twirl in your beautiful pink tutus, that even back in 1963, a tutu wasn’t just a garment; it was a symbol of beauty, grace, and artistic expression. It's a legacy that continues to inspire generations, just like it does for you, my darling Tutu Twirlers!

Until next Tuesday, my lovelies, and remember… spread the love of pink and the twirl of a good tutu! 💖
