#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 8th December 1964 (Post 6937)

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, back with another dose of Ballet Tutu History. It's a rather chilly Tuesday in London, the wind whipping up those crisp December leaves and the Christmas decorations glistening in the shop windows. I just adore this time of year – the magic in the air, the promise of festivities, and of course, the opportunity for some fabulous festive outfits! And who better to lead the way in festive fashion than yours truly?

But before we dive into the twirly delights of December 1964, let's catch a train ride back in time – because today's journey takes us back to a ballet era that saw some truly breathtaking performances. Hold onto your hats, ladies!

Now, as any self-respecting ballet enthusiast knows, 8th December 1964 marks a special day in ballet history! Yes, my darlings, it was on this very date that the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet debuted at Covent Garden! Now, picture this: the majestic Royal Opera House in all its glory, buzzing with anticipation, the very air thick with the magic of ballet, and some of the most dazzling ballerinas in the world, twirling, leaping, and captivating audiences – an unforgettable night!

I must confess, I almost felt like a little girl myself, so awed and impressed was I by the Bolshoi's performance! Imagine, their signature Russian flair and power meeting the elegance of London's Royal Ballet! The very energy was infectious. Even the music itself seemed to buzz with this mix of vibrant excitement and passionate artistry.

I, of course, looked my absolute best – a lovely vintage powder-blue tutu with shimmering accents. I couldn't resist the Parisian trend of the era – think dramatic eyeliner, perfectly-placed curls and an immaculate chignon. We’re all about the glam, right?

And speaking of glam, I also snagged a ticket to see the very lovely Margot Fonteyn grace the stage in "Giselle." It was a truly moving experience. The story of love, betrayal, and a heartbroken girl who turns into a "wilis", a ghost who dances to death those who break her heart – now that's drama! The entire theatre held its breath, completely enthralled by Fonteyn's performance. I can’t imagine a better display of exquisite ballet talent, could you?

However, there’s much more to discover about ballet's glamorous past, particularly for those of you, who like me, just adore the ballet history behind those fabulous tutus! So, let's step back in time together to unveil the fascinating stories behind some of ballet’s iconic tutu styles!

1964 - A tutu evolution?

While it may seem a tad revolutionary, the tutus of 1964 did see a shift in style, compared to the tutus of yesteryear! There was still that classical beauty, with flowing tulle and carefully crafted details. But the designs themselves were a tad bolder – there was more use of dramatic, dramatic layered tulle – Think lots of big, gorgeous blooms of tulle, creating voluminous skirts that truly accentuated the graceful movements. Oh, and those colors! Vivid greens, electric blues and fiery reds became popular choices. There were even tutus adorned with stunning jeweled embroidery! Simply exquisite!

You may have also noticed a return of the “romantische” tutu – you know, those ones with the full, dramatic skirts that practically demand you twirl? Well, I have to confess I adored it! While the classic, streamlined silhouette of the traditional tutu, as we know it, was still admired, the dramatic flow of this style just resonated with that 1964 air of rebellion! The romantische tutu was the ultimate symbol of elegance and romance, with a rebellious flair – an utterly captivating mix that never fails to catch the eye.

And those costumes! Oh, darling, talk about fashion statements! The world of ballet was on a mission to impress! The tutus were paired with shimmering fabrics and delicate, hand-beaded lace. I simply adore those rich colours, luxurious fabrics, and ornate details! It really shows the talent and dedication of costume designers at that time!

The beauty of this period was that it championed innovation and a modern spin on timeless elegance. I find it truly enchanting how ballet designers dared to be creative with fabrics and styling. Each detail, every seam and every pleat was infused with such incredible artistry!

*Where’s the ballet today? *

Speaking of exciting trends and artistic explorations, I am also planning to see "The Sleeping Beauty" next week at the Royal Opera House! A real treat! The classic, enchanting story coupled with that iconic music. My oh my, that ballet is simply divine! I already know this will be a ballet that takes me straight back to the glamorous era of 1964.

So, what does this all mean for your lovely Tutu Tuesday adventures? Well, if you're like me, the history of ballet will forever enthral. Remember to add a pinch of historical magic to your own ballet adventures. Let those gorgeous tutus transport you back in time and celebrate those fantastic styles of past decades!

Stay fashionable, my loves! And remember, pink tutus forever!

Until next week, darling readers, when we’ll uncover more ballet magic!

Warmly,

Emma
