#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - January 19, 1965! (Blog Post #6943)
Hello darlings!
It’s me, Emma, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina! 👋 Today's Tutu Tuesday takes us back to 1965 - a time when the world was brimming with exciting change, and so was ballet! Buckle up, because we’re going on a historical journey through tutus, fashion, and the magic of the stage!
From Derbyshire with Love - A Girl's Gotta Dance!
You know, the thrill of travelling back in time to witness these grand old performances is just something special. It’s a constant adventure, hopping from one ballet performance to another. I always choose the destination based on the performance! But it’s not all just about dancing, my darlings, it's also about soaking up the fashion and feeling the energy of that particular moment. This week, I found myself right in the heart of London.
January 19, 1965: A Dance of Glamour!
Now, January 19, 1965… was a big day for London's Royal Opera House! I was just bursting to get in there and see all the glamour! The Royal Ballet was presenting “The Nutcracker.” And, let me tell you, those ballerinas looked simply divine in their tutus! It's always a joy seeing the story come alive, from the snowy landscapes of the first act to the opulent Sugar Plum Fairy in Act 2. That magical, whimsical spirit is something I can't help but adore.
A Tutu for Every Occasion
Back in the mid-1960s, ballet tutus were experiencing quite the evolution. The "romantic" tutus, with their big, swirling, multi-layered skirts, were still incredibly popular, of course! We see this with our beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker - those long, wispy, fluffy tutus just scream elegance and wonder! But designers were also starting to play around with new materials, incorporating tulle and introducing lighter, less voluminous styles for some of the more dramatic performances.
The Fashion and Flair!
And the fashion! It was absolutely swoon-worthy, ladies! It was all about strong lines and feminine silhouettes. The ballerinas were looking effortlessly elegant, wearing graceful ballerina buns with delicate headbands and elegant evening gowns after their shows. Think: simple yet dramatic shapes in black, midnight blue and burgundy. Those shades complimented the pink perfectly, wouldn’t you say?
Pink - The Colour of Ballet Magic!
Now, speaking of pink - you know my love affair with this shade is unmatched! This week I discovered an incredible vintage ballet shop while exploring London. I found the most adorable pink tulle ribbon that I couldn't resist snapping up. The shopkeeper said she’d been saving it since the 1960s – oh, I am a lucky girl! You bet it's going into my collection! It will be a perfect finishing touch to my own tutus – perhaps even a ballet bun bow for a special occasion.
Time Travel Essentials!
If you ever have the chance to travel through time, remember – the most essential item is always a tutu! It’s a passport to wonder, an invitation to dance. Whether you're in Victorian London or swinging 60s New York, a pink tutu never goes out of style!
