Tutu Tuesday #6980: A Blast from the Past (and a Pink Tutu, of course!) 🩰

Hey, my lovely tutu-loving darlings! It's Emma here, back with another blast from the Ballet Tutu History archives! This week, we're travelling through time to 5th October 1965, just in time for a wonderful performance of the Royal Ballet! Isn't that just exciting? I'm practically skipping with excitement, even through the time portal (which, by the way, still doesn't work for travel anywhere BUT the past. Boo! Oh well, the costumes are way more amazing in this time period, anyway!).

Today's Tutu Tuesday adventure brings us to the magnificent Royal Opera House, the heart of ballet in London! Can you imagine? Me, all dressed in a fabulously frilly pink tutu, standing in the heart of Covent Garden, where ballet royalty has graced the stage for centuries. My pink tutu just begs for a pirouette in the opulent, grand space.

A Dance of Romance

Now, you might think that ballet was all about stiff upper lips and perfect poses back in 1965. Oh, my dears, think again! Just the other week, I watched "La Sylphide" with the Royal Ballet, and even with the most intricate steps, the movement was full of pure, effortless elegance. They moved with such freedom, and their grace was a vision, truly bewitching!

I'm sure I wasn't the only one caught up in the magical performance. It was a true feast for the eyes, seeing all those lovely costumes flitting around the stage, with colours like deep reds and midnight blues that contrasted beautifully with the vibrant yellows and lush greens.

Fashion Inspiration: Pink for the Win

Oh, and speaking of costumes! The fashion world was totally embracing colour in 1965 - think playful polka dots, psychedelic patterns, and pops of bright pink! If only we could travel through time and bring all those fun outfits back! Maybe someday I'll have the perfect idea to design some fabulous pink tutus inspired by 60s styles... hmmm... I just need to convince my time travel travel agent that such a fashion trip is crucial!

And you know what's really fabulous? Even in the 1960s, tutus were a thing! Can you imagine? Not just for ballerinas, though I do love watching them twirl on stage, no, these pretty skirts were making a big impact on the wider fashion scene! We can thank designers like Mary Quant and her famous 'mini' skirts for kicking things off. And of course, they were worn with fabulously bold prints and eye-catching colours! Imagine rocking a pink tutu in public – I think that was pretty avant-garde then!

Travel with Style:

Before I go and leave you all longing for that 1965 time period, I can’t go without mentioning the glamorous and truly magical travel of this era. Have you ever stepped on board a first class railway carriage? The plush red leather seats, the sparkling chrome, and the impeccable service... truly the way to travel in style! There’s just something about taking a train journey that lets your mind wander. Plus, it’s the perfect time to people watch – see if you can spot any budding ballerinas on their way to class!

And there you have it, folks! Another week of history, another blast from the tutu-wearing past. Let’s not forget that fashion is always about evolving and reinventing itself, just like those elegant dancers twirling on stage! Keep an eye out for next week’s #TutuTuesday – we’ll be dancing back in time, discovering new stories, and exploring more captivating tutu moments.

P.S. If you're in the mood to twirl, check out the Royal Opera House website for their latest ballet performances! Who knows? Maybe we'll be twirling together, future tutu-wearing friends! And, don't forget to wear pink! 😉

Lots of love,

Emma 💕
