#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 28th May, 1968! đŠ°đ
Welcome back, darlings! It's Emma here, your time-travelling fashionista extraordinaire, bringing you the latest from the world of tutu history on this sunny Tuesday.
I'm currently perched on a wrought iron bench in the glorious Palais Garnier in Paris. You wouldn't believe the incredible outfits people are wearing! Imagine - huge pouffy skirts, psychedelic prints, and everyone rocking some fabulous colour, from electric orange to emerald green. This era, itâs all about pushing the boundaries, darling, and tutus are no exception!
It's time to jump back into our #TutuTuesday archives for a quick glimpse into how tutus were changing the world in May of 1968. Letâs dive into the magic! â¨
1968: A Year of Change
The year 1968 was a fascinating one, filled with unrest and upheaval all around the world. The events of the time were bubbling with the energy of youth, with people taking a stand for their beliefs and expressing themselves through fashion, music, and art. But what about the ballet world, you ask? Well, darlings, the dance world was undergoing a silent revolution too, and it was definitely all about a shift in style and expression.
Revolution in the Tutu World!
The classic romantic tutu - you know the one, the multi-layered, airy design that swirls like a dream? It was still a star in the ballet world. Think of the exquisite "Giselle" tutus - wispy and magical. However, the air was electric, and something new was about to burst onto the scene.
There was a new type of ballet, darling, called âNeoclassicalâ, and it was challenging those traditional ideas and saying, âMove over, puffy skirts, we're coming through!â. Imagine a tutu, a bit more fitted at the waist, sleek and modern with fewer layers and flowing, intricate designs. Rudolf Nureyev, that magnificent dancer, became an absolute superstar on the international ballet stage, often sporting those daring and sleek new tutus! It's thrilling, itâs elegant, and itâs truly revolutionary!
Paris, Centre of Style
Of course, being here in Paris makes my heart soar with fashion excitement. This city has always been the epitome of chic, and during this time period, it was no exception. Here youâll find the finest couture, fabulous designers and the most beautiful, dazzling ballets, from Grand Ballet performances to stunning experimental work. Letâs not forget our friend âDiaghilevâ who revolutionised the world of ballet, making it not just dance but a form of visual art - a true spectacle. He had a huge influence on those new neoclassical designs, a total game changer in the tutu world, darling!
Remembering the Dance!
So, here in Paris, it's âen pointeâ (on the tip-toes!) for a special celebration at the legendary Opera Garnier today. 28th May, 1968. This historic theatre hosted one of the most famous performances of âSwan Lakeâ, with Natalia Makarova, a truly incredible ballerina known for her elegance, grace, and dramatic interpretation. Just imagining those swirling movements of the âBlack Swanâ, her dark and passionate persona⌠It makes me shiver, darling. The power! đŚ˘
And who else danced on the same stage but Rudolf Nureyev, one of the most celebrated ballerinos ever. A beautiful, passionate dance, captivating all audiences.
What A Fashion Era!
Even on the streets, tutus were making an impact! Fashion had really gone mad in those âSwinging Sixtiesâ and this was just before âThe Summer of Loveâ, darling. There was this trend called âhippie chicâ and we're talking tie dye, mini skirts, headbandsâŚall this fabulousness! But you see, those designs were so close to a dancerâs body shape! Imagine, this sort of casual-yet-chic tutu inspiration on the streets!
And let's not forget âThe Ballet Shoesâ, a wonderfully sweet story about two young sisters who attend ballet classes in London and discover that a hidden magic leads them on a grand adventure. It's like âMary Poppinsâ for tutus! I loved it when I was a girl!
The Future Is Bright!
I canât wait to see what fashion innovations are going to pop up next in our tutu timeline - perhaps more elaborate costumes, shimmering sparkle designs, and tutus that take flight on the stage!
That's all from me for today! Until next Tuesday, darlings.
Now excuse me, Iâm going to take a waltz through the gorgeous Parisian streets to a wonderful little shop. They say it has the most delicious hot chocolate in the entire city! Oh, darling, what fun we shall have. đŤâ¨
Love, Emma
