#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1968-09-03
Welcome back, darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu aficionado, ready to whisk you off on another journey through time – and to remind you why, every single day should be #TutuTuesday. This week, we're taking a trip back to the glorious 3rd September 1968.
As I step off the train at Grand Central Station, New York, (don't you just adore the romance of the train? It makes any trip feel so special!) a wave of the 1960s hits me. The air crackles with electric excitement. Everyone's moving like they're on the moon, and fashion? Well, let's just say my little pink tutu is getting a lot of stares! But, darling, don't let that phase you. Confidence is always in style!
The tutu I'm wearing today is an absolute dream. Imagine the lightest, fluffiest tulle, crafted to look like an ethereal cloud. I've adorned it with sparkling sequins in shades of lavender and pink, just a touch of glamour for a time when flower power reigns supreme!
And why the 3rd of September, you ask? Well, my dearest lovelies, this date marks the grand opening of The Metropolitan Opera House! Can you believe it? A majestic theatre for all to revel in the artistry of opera. Just the thought of the stunning performances to be held there makes my heart sing. I can't wait to take in a show in this beautiful new space. Just think of the dresses, the emotions, the soaring melodies… the absolute wonder of it all!
Now, 1968 isn't the dawn of the tutu, as you well know, my darlings! We've danced through the 18th century, with our frilly predecessors like Marie Taglioni in those iconic Romantic Ballet costumes. We've pirouetted through the romanticism of the Victorian Era with their intricate designs. The tutu is a legacy, an evolution, a symbol of the ballet dancer's spirit - bold, graceful, and eternally expressive!
But let's get back to 1968! It's not all about opera tonight. You see, the 1960s saw the rise of ballet's popularity around the world, even making its way into mainstream media, something to rejoice in!
I simply adore ballet's versatility. You see it performed in theatres, on stages, and even on the streets. It's a dance for every soul, be you in the heart of Paris or the rolling hills of Derbyshire. Remember my darlings, no matter where we go, the spirit of the ballet always stays with us, reminding us to hold ourselves tall and move with grace.
Just think, the very people who will witness those spectacular operatic performances will have seen ballet dancing, and they will witness its timeless beauty on stage!
Oh, the joy of being a time traveler!
Well, my darling Tutu lovers, this is just a glimpse into the magical history of tutus. Stay tuned for more captivating journeys through time. I'll be back next #TutuTuesday with a new adventure! Until then, remember, a pink tutu can brighten up any day, even in the midst of historical turmoil! Be fearless, be beautiful, and don't forget to embrace your inner ballerina!
With all my love and pirouettes, Emma
