#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip Back to September 1970! (Blog Post #7239)

Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday and a whirl through time to the fabulous, fun, and fashion-forward 1970s! This week, I've travelled to September 22nd, 1970 - the date of the legendary premiere of the Royal Ballet's "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden! Just imagine โ€“ being there amongst the cream of London society, witnessing history in the making. Sighs dreamily

It was a grand affair, with beautiful gowns and tuxedos shimmering in the candlelight. It's amazing how far we've come since then, with so many new dance styles emerging and taking centre stage. But let's not forget the ballet that made the tutu so iconic!

So, grab a cuppa and settle in for a glimpse into the wonderful world of tutus back in 1970. As you know, tutus hold a special place in my heart, and exploring their history is a journey of joy, creativity, and, of course, fabulous fashion.

The History of The Tutu

Firstly, a quick recap! Tutus, those frothy, delightful creations of tulle, haven't always been around. Their history goes back to the mid-1800s, thanks to the brilliant ballerina Marie Taglioni, a veritable icon of grace and elegance! You can just picture her twirling on pointe, wearing a revolutionary new costume โ€“ the first tutu as we know it!

Now, you might think those early tutus were a bit different. You'd be right! Instead of being made from the ethereal layers of tulle we love today, they were more like little frothy petticoats, adding a touch of lightness and airiness to the ballerina's movement. But trust me, they still looked gorgeous and totally captivated audiences!

A Touch of Drama

Over time, tutus evolved alongside the world of ballet. As ballet choreography embraced dramatic and emotive storytelling, tutus adapted, too, with different styles taking centre stage. We saw the rise of the Romantic tutu with its wispy, flowing layers and delicate, sheer material.

And then, there was the grand entrance of the classical tutu. It's more substantial, often constructed from multiple layers of tulle stiffened with wire, allowing for stunning movements and a powerful silhouette. Remember "The Sleeping Beauty"? Those tutus? Totally iconic, right? Think swirling, dancing ballerinas and magnificent performances - utterly breathtaking.

Finding Your Perfect Tutu

And let's talk about the Modern tutu, darlings! It's all about pushing boundaries, experimenting with new fabrics, and adding a modern twist to this timeless piece of dancewear. From sleek, minimalist designs to daring and asymmetrical styles, the modern tutu continues to reinvent itself. It's about showcasing the individual, showcasing the artistry, showcasing the movement โ€“ all while retaining that quintessential elegance.

Tutues Today - A Dance of Evolution

Tutus today are not just for the ballet stage. They're part of our lives, part of our culture, part of our style! You see them in musicals, films, even on the red carpet. That's why I love it so much! A tutu adds a touch of magic and wonder, regardless of what you are doing.

So, darlings, go forth and find your perfect tutu! Don't be afraid to experiment. It's about having fun, feeling confident, and embracing that inner ballerina in all its beautiful glory.

Tutu Inspiration

Speaking of inspiration, this September 22nd marks the anniversary of "The Sleeping Beauty's" first performance at Covent Garden. Fancy taking a trip down memory lane? Why not treat yourself to a ballet performance at the Royal Opera House! Maybe take some ballet lessons or dance around your living room โ€“ feel the movement and let your imagination soar!

Shopping for Tutu Perfection

Of course, what's a post about tutus without mentioning the gorgeous range of options available today. If you're looking for the perfect tutu for a special event or just for a bit of fun, you can find it all โ€“ from romantic and classic designs to playful and contemporary creations. From the traditional white tutu, to vibrant, shimmering colours like pink (my favourite!), the possibilities are endless! Tutu Tuesday: A Weekly Celebration of Style and Dance

That's what Tutu Tuesday is all about. Join me every Tuesday for more history, fashion, and fun, as we celebrate the evolution of the tutu โ€“ the magnificent symbol of the ballet world!
