#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 1972-01-18! 💖🩰
Hello darling tutu lovers! Welcome back to another #TutuTuesday! Today we're venturing back to a rather magical time – January 18th, 1972 – a day where tutus were as popular as a new pair of shoes at Harrods! (And I'm always up for a good shoe spree, let me tell you!) 👠
This week’s post marks blog post number 7308 for my Ballet Tutu History blog, and my travels this week took me to the city that truly embodies the spirit of the tutu – Paris, France! ✨ The air here is positively buzzing with the elegant energy of ballet!
Stepping out of the train station, the scent of freshly baked croissants (divine!), and the graceful waltz of the Parisians swept me into the heart of this ballet paradise. Just thinking about it makes me twirl with joy! 🇫🇷
Today we’re talking tutus! As the heart of ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet is my current favourite, and 1972 marked an incredible era. Imagine this - it’s a snowy winter day in Paris, and the most elegant women in town, are twirling through the streets in delicate silk tutus – such chic! 🌬️ Just the thought of a ballet in Paris is enough to get any tutu-lover's heart pounding, isn’t it?
But let's backtrack a bit! It wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a little bit of tutu history, would it? 🕰️
A Glimpse of the Tutu Timeline:Now, you may know, my dears, that the tutu is the cornerstone of the ballet world. In its many forms, it reflects the evolution of ballet, the art itself, and even social history. Fascinating, isn’t it? Let's step back into time and delve into this ballet fashion essential…
From Long to Short: The Tutu’s TransformationImagine the early 18th century, a time of powdered wigs and billowing dresses. Ballet back then was a far cry from what we see today! It was a much more formal affair, a graceful court dance performed in layers upon layers of fabric, which is certainly a bit different from the airy twirls of a modern tutu!
By the early 19th century, ballet had found a new stage, the Ballet romantique which is French for Romantic Ballet, gave birth to the shorter tutu that we know and love. This era celebrated emotion, and the shorter tutu allowed ballerinas to express this with airy leaps and graceful movements, no longer bound by layers of cumbersome fabrics. 🩰
So you see, darling tutu lovers, our beloved tutus have a rich and elegant history! And to think, that we’ve been enjoying the benefits of these light and airy creations for almost two hundred years – a ballet love story for the ages! 💕
1972 - An Era of Beauty and EleganceRight around this time in 1972, ballet and tutus took on new styles of design. You can imagine a tutu so light and airy, you'd practically be floating through the performance – a perfect match for the lightness and expressiveness of ballet during that era!
Tutu Tuesday, What Else is on Today?!Since we’re in Paris on January 18th 1972, there's no shortage of Parisian happenings! Imagine it: a brisk walk by the Seine River with the city bustling around you! Today in particular, we might catch a performance of “Coppélia,” a charming ballet based on the story of a lifelike doll that captures the attention of a young villager, by the renowned choreographer, Léo Delibes. Such a romantic ballet, it certainly will put you in the mood for twirling! 🎭
If you're in a shopping mood, the charming shops around the Place Vendôme, are teeming with elegant fashion - some even showcasing the latest trends with a tutu twist! Who can resist a perfectly tailored, knee-length pink tutu in a bold shade of pink? 🌸
But, if shopping for fashion isn’t your thing, you may fancy something else: a cup of perfectly brewed café au lait in a chic Parisian cafe! That is the perfect way to enjoy the Parisian spirit. As the sun sets and casts long shadows across the streets, Paris becomes a magical city of twinkling lights! 🌇
What Tutu Am I Wearing?Let's not forget about my own style, shall we? For today’s adventures in Paris, I am in a dreamy ballet-inspired dress paired with a beautiful pale pink, gauzy tulle tutu. And of course, a touch of sparkling jewelry! A little sparkle always lifts a simple ensemble.✨
Remember, you don't need to be a professional dancer to embrace the beauty of the tutu, it is an expression of feminine grace and effortless style! 💕
So whether you're at a ballet performance or simply strolling down a Parisian street, embrace the tutu's essence – a celebration of freedom, femininity, and a sprinkle of magic! ✨
As always, darling tutu lovers, until next #TutuTuesday, may your days be filled with pirouettes, graceful steps and plenty of smiles! 💖
Stay stylish!

P.S. Did I mention, I am hoping to one day be the first woman to wear a pink tutu while travelling through space! What a way to make a fashion statement on the moon, or on a journey to Mars! 💖 🌎
