#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 11th July 1972 ā A Whirl Through The Decades!
Hello, darling tutu lovers! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu-clad time traveller. It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another #TutuTuesday blog post. Today, I'm taking you back to the summer of 1972, a time when bell-bottoms ruled, platform shoes were the height of fashion, and, of course, tutus were a symbol of grace and elegance.
Todayās blog post, the 7,333rd post since we started here on www.pink-tutu.com, is another exploration into the exciting world of tutus through history. It's a whirl through the decades, because really, who wouldnāt love a little history and a good tutudini outfit with my own personal take on all things tutus, fabulous frocks and beautiful ballet shoes?
1972: The Year of the Big Bows!
So let's rewind the clock to 1972. Weāre in a magical placeā¦and to find out where I am you have to do a little bit of searching! I wonāt tell you everything - let your imagination soar to see how well you know the amazing world of the ballet!
1972 was a year of bold, beautiful and bright colours. In ballet, the romantic tutu remained popular - those floaty, beautiful skirts, full of layers and lace. Just imagine swirling and twirling in a gorgeous, pink, ruffled tulle skirtā¦it just makes my heart skip a beat! Tutus at this time were made with lots of pretty little details: intricate stitching, gorgeous hand-stitched embellishmentsā¦and bows, lots and lots of bows! Theyāre like big smiles, adorning the delicate tutu with ribbons and silk. Oh, I have so many photos of beautiful, shimmering tutus that were made and worn at this time in my own, personal, time travel collection - but alas, I canāt share those here. Just think though! Think about the beautiful creations of that era. You can even imagine them for yourselves!
Now, on a very important date of 1972 weāre thinking ofā¦you can see how fashionable and elegant a tutu can beā¦a classic garment that is stylish and can be worn in lots of amazing different ways. Itās still my absolute favourite piece of clothing, and the world would be a much happier place if everyone embraced the pink tutu as I do!
Todayās post is also going to give you some extra delicious inspiration for some fabulous frocks. Oh, how I love going to theatre, to see shows - and to wear all of my fancy tutu inspired outfitsā¦ itās so wonderful. Tutus donāt just belong in ballet studios you know. Tutudini can be fabulous anywhere you go! In 1972, even everyday fashions echoed the trends in ballet - youād have spotted tutus and ballerina styles in casual clothing too, and on the high street! Imagine it. We all dancing about our daily lives - there is an absolutely delightful air about the pink tutu, especially if we can get them on all the shops! The possibilities for all things tutu-inspired are practically endless. Don't just stop at the dance studios or on stageā¦ you can wear your passion for tutus, every single day, and the joy that they bring everywhere!
The London Ballet
I have to tell you about the London Ballet in 1972. One of my favourite companies! There were all kinds of performances going on: The Royal Ballet at Covent Garden (don't we all love London!) and The Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet had some truly extraordinary performances and exciting stories to tell - such fabulous tutu wearing ballerinas on stage, and, you know, on the streets too! Think how exciting it must have been to get to see those stars of the ballet - oh my word. Ballet truly is the height of artistic expression, and I am in awe of what goes on in the world of danceā¦
But tutus weren't only reserved for those on stage you know. Back in my own time - Derbyshire in England - it was common to spot ballerina styles out and about in all kinds of shops. They brought the beauty of dance to the everyday! The ballerina-inspired look was a statement of sophistication and style that we all can easily recreate with a little bit of creativityā¦a lovely tutu is such a lovely little nod to something glamorous!
Travelling By Train in 1972
Well, you might be surprised, but one of my very favourite ways to travel is by train. They're so beautiful. Itās a romantic form of travel, so perfect for exploring and discovering. Think about the windows, the steam, the passing scenery, the beautiful train stations - so wonderful. You can watch the world roll by! I think itās all the romance of the theatreā¦a wonderful time for a grand adventureā¦just a really stylish way to get around. I have to tell you, it is so fabulous, there is no better way to see the world and everything from the world of dance to fashion, just from your train window! It's magical, just like those big, sweeping tutus...
And of course, it wouldnāt be a trip through the 1970s without a mention of the music. Oh, the music - think 1970s - I love to go out to all sorts of performances: to dance to the beat, in my own tutu, naturally - and for fashion, it gives so much inspiration! Music makes my soul sing, but for you all, today I leave you with a little riddle, a small clue from my recent adventure!
Think Bigā¦A Ballet Tale for This Date
If I say āThe big, beautiful dance of an emperorā then youāre on the right track to find out exactly what date I am referring to! Youāve got this! Letās get our tutus ready, for more fabulous frocks to celebrate. Iām so happy you are with me today - and in the past, all those wonderful dates! I have to dash, because the musicās calling! Until next week darling, have a beautiful weekā¦ wear lots of pinksā¦and, naturally, wear lots of tutus. Happy #TutuTuesday!
With much love, Emma, The Time-Travelling Ballerina xx
