#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 1973-04-24

Hello darling tutu-lovers! Welcome back to another #TutuTuesday on www.pink-tutu.com. It’s me, Emma, your favourite tutu-obsessed time traveller from Derbyshire, and today we’re venturing back to 1973, the year that truly brought tutus to the fore!

Oh, 1973, such a fabulous time for fashion and a fabulous time for ballet! As usual, I have a fabulously pink tutu on for today's post – it’s got some shimmering sequins and layers of delicate pink tulle, a real head-turner, I promise!

Now, let’s get down to tutu business, because 1973 saw a significant shift in tutu design! Think daring silhouettes and breathtaking choreography! You might be surprised to learn that the “tutu” as we know it didn’t really exist in the early days of ballet! In the 1800s, dancers were practically swaddled in long, restrictive dresses. Oh, the tragedy! But then along came Marie Taglioni, a glorious ballerina with legs for days, who made the scene in the 1840s. Her dance, La Sylphide, sparked the invention of the romantic tutu. We’re talking flowing layers of white tulle, light as a feather.

Moving on to 1973, the year when a little piece of history was made in the world of ballet! This was the year of the Bolshoi Ballet's “The Nutcracker” – think dramatic choreography, dazzling costumes, and of course, beautiful tutus. Talk about breathtaking! Natalia Bessmertnova, a legendary ballerina with unbelievable grace, stole the show as the Sugar Plum Fairy! It was her incredible performance in that enchanting white tutu with a cascade of tulle that set the stage for ballet's next grand transformation.

You see, by 1973, ballerinas weren’t afraid to showcase their athleticism. Think of Margot Fonteyn in her captivating role as Odette and Odile in “Swan Lake”, a tour de force with elegant, flowing white tutus. But in the latter role, Odile, there’s a change, a black tutu, sleek and stylish. That daring use of color brought the audience to its feet!

On April 24th, 1973, it’s highly likely that some magnificent tutu-ed ballerina was performing somewhere in the world! Could they have been in New York? London? Perhaps Vienna, Paris, or Moscow! These iconic ballet companies were all buzzing with amazing shows on that date. My best guess would be the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow - they had “La Bayadère” in the repertoire, showcasing even more beautiful tutus. And what a magnificent story it tells!

And let’s not forget the costumes – a beautiful ballerina in a stunning tutu needs a dazzling costume, am I right? 1973 was all about embellishment and elegance –think sequins, beads, and feathers galore. And if you ask me, tutus weren't only reserved for the stage! I've been rummaging through some of my favourite 1970s fashion magazines and oh my, have I found some inspiration! Women were sporting romantic tutus everywhere - think discos, cocktail parties, even shopping sprees!

I've just arrived back from the glamorous, fast-paced world of 1973 – I found myself taking in the amazing ballet at the Paris Opera Ballet – the dancing was divine and the costumes spectacular – with a dash of feathers here and there for added glamour, it made my pink heart skip a beat! Afterwards, I indulged in some delicious Parisian patisserie and bought a new tutu for the collection. It's a gorgeous powder pink, a delicate swirl of layers with soft sequins shimmering with every twirl. It would be absolutely perfect for the spring, and I know it’ll be the perfect tutu to show off for the rest of my adventures, darling!

You’ve just gotta remember – the power of a tutu is boundless, a magical element in fashion, theatre, dance and storytelling. From shimmering sequins to elegant lines, they've always had a place in history, just as they have a place in our hearts! It’s my mission to get everyone on board with wearing tutus, not just on stage, but everywhere! Remember, a tutu is more than just an outfit; it’s a statement, a feeling, a way of life!

So, keep those eyes open for more adventures next #TutuTuesday! In the meantime, darling, if you ever feel a twinge of creativity, feel free to don your own tutus! Who knows? You might just find yourself on the other side of the stage, embracing your inner ballerina!
