#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - December 11th, 1973! (Post #7407)

Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, back with another installment of my Ballet Tutu History blog! Today's #TutuTuesday takes us back to December 11th, 1973, a date that saw the world of ballet and tutus positively twirling with excitement! Buckle up, darling, it's going to be a whirl!

Remember my lovelies, history's not just about dusty old books. It's about stories! It's about the people, the moments, the fashion! It's about how those tutus made history - and, I have to confess, it's always about tutus! 😉

This time, I’ve hopped on the magical, pink-tutu-lined train of time and arrived in… wait for it… New York City! 🗽 Ooh, I simply adore this metropolis! The energy! The hustle and bustle! The bright lights!

But most importantly for our #TutuTuesday dive, New York City is a mecca for ballet lovers. It's the home of the legendary New York City Ballet and the magnificent Lincoln Center. Fancy tutus? They've got 'em! Elegant pointe shoes? You betcha!

Now, before I share what's happening today in 1973, I have to share the incredible find I made in the vintage clothing section of a divine little shop called “Whimsical Threads.” 👒 You wouldn't believe it, lovelies, I found the most stunning lavender tutu. Imagine a soft, shimmering fabric with layers of the most beautiful, intricate floral detailing. It was pure magic! I bought it, of course, and shall wear it for my next performance in Derbyshire. Oh, the twirls I shall be making! 💖

So, back to the history...

On December 11th, 1973, New York City Ballet were opening a brand new production - “Concerto Barocco” by George Balanchine! This was major, my darlings! Balanchine, a true ballet legend, was already renowned for his groundbreaking work, and the expectations were sky high. The piece was a celebration of baroque music, a real showstopper featuring a captivating score by Bach and beautiful tutus in pale pastels – perfect for a ballerina like me, don't you think? 🩰

Just imagine, darling: a room packed with theatre-goers, the shimmering spotlight, the hush before the music starts. Then… the stage comes to life! Elegant dancers in stunning tutus and those beautiful, effortless pirouettes! It’s just breathtaking, isn’t it? 🤩

And here's what makes this especially fascinating - “Concerto Barocco” wasn't just any production. It wasn’t just another show, it was the kind of ballet that captured imaginations. The costumes, the movement, the sheer artistry… It truly captured the spirit of the times.

I must add a little tidbit for all the fashionable folk like myself out there! Did you know that in 1973, a certain fashion designer by the name of Yves Saint Laurent presented a collection inspired by… ballet? The tutu was front and centre! Suddenly, the ballet aesthetic became the hottest trend. That's right, lovelies! Ballerinas weren’t just inspiring dancers. They were fashion icons, too! 🤩 It was a time when ballet, fashion, and style were truly interwoven. It’s like all our favorite things! 💕

But this, my lovelies, is just the beginning.

There’s so much more to explore in the tutu timeline. So much to learn, so much to love, so much to share!

Did you know… that ballet in 1973 was exploding across the globe? From the classical ballet traditions of the Royal Ballet in London, to the modern dance scene blossoming in places like Germany and France, tutus were taking the world by storm! We can even find mentions of beautiful ballerina outfits in books and movies, with characters often wearing the stunning designs, inspiring a whole generation of girls and boys alike. 💖

For now, though, darling, we’ll wrap up this installment of #TutuTuesday. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the latest developments in ballet history, from the captivating costumes and beautiful moves to the social and cultural changes around the globe! Remember to check in next Tuesday, same time, same place for another exciting dive into the past – with, of course, a whole lot of pink tutus and twirling fun along the way!

And remember, lovelies… you don’t need to be a ballerina to enjoy a beautiful tutu. I firmly believe in wearing pink tutus whenever, wherever. 😉 Don’t forget to grab one, share your style, and #SpreadTheTutuLove!

Love,

Emma 💖

*(Remember, I fund my time travels by performing in ballet shows. Want to come to Derbyshire and see my next show? It’ll be dazzling!) 😉 *
