Tutu Tuesday #7456: A 1974 Time Warp! 💖

Hey tutu-lovers! Welcome back to another #TutuTuesday where we explore the wonderful history of ballet tutus! This week, I’m taking a trip back to 1974. It's like a time machine for your imagination, isn't it?

Now, you may be wondering – how does one even get to 1974? Well, as any savvy ballerina knows, it's all about the fundraising! Last month, I gave a dazzling performance in a fundraiser gala, "Twinkle Toes for Time Travel," and the response was absolutely incredible. People loved my performance! I wore a specially designed iridescent pink tutu with silver embellishments – utterly magical. With that money, I finally had enough for my trip.

My Destination? The Paris Opera Ballet. Now, Paris has always been known for its exquisite fashion and of course, its world-renowned ballet. This date marks a particularly exciting one in ballet history - November 19th, 1974 was the first performance of Michel Fokine’s "The Firebird" with a completely new staging! Now, Michel Fokine, you say? Oh, darling! He’s one of the most iconic choreographers of the 20th century. Revolutionary! The choreography itself is spectacularly vibrant – full of beautiful, intricate movements.

You might be thinking, “But Emma, what's so different about this particular 'Firebird' performance? It’s not a new ballet." Oh, my dear, this is a pivotal moment! The legendary Russian ballerina, Natalia Makarova was playing the lead! Can you imagine? Just the name sends shivers down my spine! And she was, of course, performing in the most stunning costume, designed by Alexandre Benois. Now, Alexander Benois was the original costume designer for "The Firebird" and his costumes were breathtaking - lavish and ornate. The whole aesthetic – just gorgeous. To be there... My tutu wouldn’t have been pink, that’s for sure! But a tutu nevertheless, you bet!

But it’s not just about ballet performances in Paris. It’s about the city, the vibe. The Parisian street style was just divine – so chic and elegant. Think sharp cuts, beautiful scarves, and statement boots. And imagine the vibrant colors, like pops of teal and scarlet. It’s not just the fashion, but how the Parisians carried themselves - a casual but confident elegance. You can see why Parisian fashion was so influential back then. I shopped 'til I dropped! It would be such a dream to design my own Parisian-inspired line, I'm telling you.

Speaking of dreams, what did I wear to 1974 Paris? My go-to outfit for traveling was a beautiful blush pink tweed jacket paired with a comfy knit jumper in a dusty pink hue, of course! And of course, it had to be finished off with a gorgeous midi-length, powder pink pleated skirt. What’s a trip to Paris without a stylish pink skirt! To complete the look? My little white patent leather boots. Oh darling, they're my absolute favourite. They add a hint of rock and roll edge to the whole ensemble. A ballerina's got to know how to walk, and run in those heels! It’s important to feel good and confident when traveling, especially for such an iconic ballet history moment!

Now, it’s not all Parisian fancy fashion. Remember, my mission is to get everyone wearing pink tutus!

Did you know: tutus have changed drastically throughout the years - not just in shape and fabric, but the attitude too. The “romantic tutu,” for example, in the 19th century was about soft, flowing lines and delicate embroidery – the ideal of feminine grace. Then came the “classical tutu” - shorter and fuller - allowing for dynamic movements that were all about strength and power! It’s fascinating to see how these transformations reflect societal ideals of what a dancer should be, and the evolution of fashion itself!

For this particular 1974 performance, Makarova wore a beautifully structured costume, with layers of tulle and elaborate detail. It represents a more classic style – shorter, but still very elaborate and elegant, highlighting the graceful movement and delicate beauty of the ballerina.

So, I'll say it again, dear tutu lovers – we must all wear pink tutus and embrace their gorgeous, stylish, empowering energy! Imagine everyone strutting around in pink tutus – a world full of bright smiles and delightful dancing. It’s a dream worth striving for!
