#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Twirl Through 1976!

Post Number 7547

Hello darlings, and welcome to another exciting week on www.pink-tutu.com, where the magic of the tutu reigns supreme!

Today, I'm taking my pink tulle train right back to 1976, a time of disco fever, bell-bottoms and yes, believe it or not, even more fabulous tutus than we have now! I feel a slight breeze of "Saturday Night Fever" wafting through my vintage Parisian tea room (one of my favourite stops on my current time-travelling adventures!). I've had a brilliant time seeing what fashion was all about this year.

A Step Back in Time

Now, let’s have a little twirl back to the world of ballet and tutus. It was all about graceful movement, a little bit of whimsy, and of course, those flowing tulle masterpieces that made us all feel like fairies! The most iconic performance this year is probably Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn's final performance together as they take their bows on stage in London at the Royal Opera House. Can you imagine!

And speaking of legendary figures, can you imagine having lunch with Baryshnikov himself? That's the level of coolness and glamour we’re dealing with here. Baryshnikov was having quite a year, starring in “The Turning Point”, his "Don Quixote" with American Ballet Theatre and wowing audiences around the world! He would've worn a traditional pointe shoe but I am sure a good tutu would not have gone amiss in his performance - what a legend!

Speaking of performances, what was happening on August 17th 1976, the day I've decided to explore today, well my darlings… It's a date that still resonates today. A huge performance by a talented bunch in Montreal called "The Olympics”! My Tutu Timeline shows a ballet inspired performance that featured lots of twirling and twirling - lots of tulle was used! It is very well known in the dancing world! Just the mention of "Olympics", puts a twinkle in my eye. A chance to wear something sparkly with an extra poofy skirt is a rare treat, my dears!

Shopping Spree

While we’re talking about sparkles, 1976 had some absolutely dreamy outfits, all swirling and swaying like my own tulle skirts. Imagine a trip to Biba, a store as legendary as my own ballet performances (of which there have been more than 75,000! ), filled with shimmering fabric and stunning outfits! Those amazing beaded fabrics would look fantastic draped into a tutu and styled to look as glamorous as the seventies dancers on "Saturday Night Fever". Oh, to be young and fashionable again in those swinging days! I would spend every last penny on all the wonderful garments - including, of course, a vintage tutu.

I even found some of my favourite outfits – they were a far cry from what we wear today, with flares and silk dresses all the rage.

Now imagine wearing that incredible pink silk dress as you sashay down a Parisian street - or on board a luxurious train journey - (train journeys are still very important to me as I move from one historical era to another).

I even have to try out a bit of disco fever at a local disco - there is no other way to finish off a visit to 1976 without doing a bit of dancing. It’s such fun! If only I had the ability to stay in the past longer and not have to race back to the twenty-first century to fulfil my next performance commitments!

A Call for Pink

But what is a ballet dancer without her tutu? A few hours spent in the archives confirmed that the seventies embraced the elegance and the whimsy that only a good tutu can give you. That flowing fabric, it’s just pure magic, a a testament to creativity and movement.

My dears, I can tell that we're seeing a a resurgence in vintage tutus, and I know there will always be a need for that feeling of swirling tulle and a hint of sparkle on a beautiful garment, even here in our fast-moving twenty-first century. And, you know what, with the return to classic fashion on the catwalks, it's about time everyone had the chance to look their most stylish by embracing their inner tutu - it can't just be ballet dancers that enjoy this exquisite art!

Think Pink

So, for next Tuesday’s post, why not get creative and try some a vintage tulle fabric for yourselves? Let's spread the tutu-love and show the world what a good tulle tutu can do for a wardrobe! Make a statement, try it on a pair of jeans, or, as I often do, a fashionable pink silk frock - you’ll see how versatile these creations are! It can make any outfit a little more elegant, romantic, and fun!

I would love to see pictures of you in your tulle creations - I’ll be posting on www.pink-tutu.com from the comfort of my tea room in Derbyshire!

See you soon,

Emma xx
