#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Through 1976!

Post Number 7548

Hiya, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, reporting live from
well, let's just say it's somewhere a bit further back in time. Yes, the magic of travel via pointe shoes has once again whisked me away!

Today, we're doing a little dance through history on our favourite subject: tutus, my dears!

So, pop the kettle on, grab a slice of Victoria sponge, and let's take a trip to August 24th, 1976. Remember the long hot summer? (Goodness, my Nan still goes on about it, all those record-breaking temperatures!)

This particular day marks a pretty important date in fashion, especially if you're a fan of tulle. The iconic movie "A Chorus Line" hit the screens! And what better costume for these incredible dancers than a fabulously feathered and fringed tutu? It was truly a testament to the dazzling magic of theatre.

But let’s rewind the tape a bit – tutus have a long, glittering history. You can't mention tutus without mentioning Marie Taglioni and that je ne sais quoi Parisian chic she embodied. The story goes that the revolutionary “Romantic” tutu, famously showcased in La Sylphide, was so groundbreaking because it allowed for unprecedented freedom of movement and was light and airy, emphasizing graceful movement. A revolutionary new way for a ballerina to express her art!

This era – early 1800s, when ballerinas looked less like corseted ladies and more like sprites on stage - really laid the foundations for the ever-evolving tutu. We started to see more variety – long, romantic, whimsical, classic, all of which have contributed to the captivating array of tutus we have today.

By the time we reach 1976, the tutu had truly come into its own, representing a captivating mix of practicality and elegance. And even the “practice tutu”, as those fabulous training dancers wore in "A Chorus Line" had an impact on how we all saw them. We see the tutus being transformed to reflect not just the movement, but the story they’re helping tell. They weren’t just costumes anymore; they were expressions of artistic vision.

So, what else can we expect on this stylish trip back in time? Well, a glimpse at some fantastic designs. 1976, a time when disco was still taking the world by storm. You can bet we’re going to see some shimmering sequins and boldly colored tulles. It's not just about what is on the stage, though. This era, the dance world started pushing boundaries even further. New techniques were being developed and explored. We're looking at powerful female dancers with real attitude. They’re breaking out of the traditional boxes and embracing their individual strength.

This reminds me of a performance I saw last week - we can see the flamboyance of 1976, reflected in contemporary dancers! Just because we’re now wearing sparkly tracksuits with leotards and tights to class (trust me, I tried the full tutus – no room to pliĂ©) doesn’t mean those principles aren’t as relevant now.

And to my dearest Derbyshire, my little slice of English paradise. Oh, the train journeys I’ve enjoyed on this journey to 1976. (Don't worry, I've been practicing my chat with the old dears who just have to tell you about the wartime. Such lovely women - bless their cotton socks!) But the trains! They are a microcosm of this era in so many ways. People are so well dressed - suits, blouses, and hats abound, and those fabulous wide-leg trousers! My mind boggles at the amount of gorgeous vintage treasures I've spotted...but I have my eye on some truly fabulous retro tutus to add to my collection!

However, don't worry, even as I travel through time and enjoy the finer things in life, I never forget my ultimate goal: to get everyone wearing a pink tutu! After all, you can't really celebrate the amazing evolution of ballet tutus without giving a shoutout to pink.

So, that's all for today's post, darlings. But remember: Embrace the tutu, go for the classic style or be bold with a touch of the unexpected. Whatever your tutu style, wear it with confidence and grace, and let it inspire you to move, express yourself, and spread a little sparkle wherever you go!

See you next Tuesday for more adventures in the world of ballet!

Emma x
