Tutu Tuesday: A Blast From The Past!
#TutuTuesday Post Number 7557
Greetings fellow tutu enthusiasts! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! It’s me, Emma, your pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina. This week, I’m taking us back to the 26th October 1976 – quite a date, my darlings! Now, we all know the 70s were a real kaleidoscope of colour and style, but you wouldn’t catch me in anything but a tutu – and a pink one at that! It's just SO wonderfully flamboyant!
Now, for a little historical ballet trivia… On this date in 1976, one of my favourite ballets, Swan Lake, was being performed in London. Now, Swan Lake was first performed back in 1877 and has become an absolute classic. We're talking graceful leaps, delicate movements, and the iconic "White Swan" and "Black Swan" costumes… It’s enough to make any tutu lover weep with joy!
Tutu Evolution: A Tale Of Twirls & Twirls
1976, in ballet land, was all about bold movement, experimentation and a nod to the fashion of the era. Think flared bell-bottoms, a touch of disco flair, and of course, the glorious tutu. And in my personal opinion, no era did the tutu better!
Tutus in 1976 were still crafted with that classic ballet design – think layers upon layers of tulle – but the fabric and colour choices were bold and daring. The tulle itself, much lighter than in previous years, gave the ballerinas this lovely fluttering effect as they danced. I can't help but get carried away imagining them swirling across the stage! It was the start of the tutu revolution – less of the heavy traditional look and more emphasis on elegant, flowing grace.
Taking Tutu Trends From The Stage to The Street
One thing I adore is how ballet and fashion just seem to go hand-in-hand. This was so true in the 70s! The tutu had definitely started to permeate the fashion world. From elegant cocktail gowns to flirty everyday looks, you could see this soft, dreamy look reflected in women's fashion. Imagine, little girls sporting mini tutus in shades of blush and rose while women donned chic long tutus with chunky heels – just heavenly!
Tutu Travel Diaries
Now, as you all know, travelling is in my blood – and I've just gotten back from a wonderful trip to London! It’s an absolutely fabulous city, buzzing with creativity and the latest fashion trends. Naturally, I had to catch a couple of shows while I was there! Oh, the magic!
My first performance was Swan Lake – just as dreamy as I remembered it! There is something truly beautiful about watching dancers glide across the stage, a graceful ballet of emotion. It had me captivated from beginning to end. And it’s not just about the ballet – the costumes and sets are like stepping into another world. Talk about a visual feast for the eyes!
For my second performance, I went to The Nutcracker. Now, The Nutcracker has always held a special place in my heart – there’s nothing quite like a little holiday magic! The dancing snowflakes and playful sugarplum fairies are absolute joy to watch. And, of course, the adorable little Mouse King! This year’s production had the most beautiful pink and lilac tutus – they really gave off a winter wonderland vibe.
My London Shopping Spree
Of course, no trip to London is complete without a little shopping therapy. I went a little “tutu mad”, browsing the beautiful tulle, lace and ribbons in Soho's vintage shops. I ended up getting this most glorious pink tutu for a vintage ballerina party that I’m planning. You wouldn't believe how much this lovely feather boa will enhance my costume! And what goes better with a pink tutu than a hot cuppa from a lovely vintage tea shop?! You’re looking at one happy ballerina, darling!

Remember, everyone has a little bit of ballerina in them – just put on your most beautiful pink tutu and unleash your inner twirling self! Until next week, stay pink!
Lots of love,
Emma
