Tutu Tuesday: The 1970s – When Tutu Trends Took Off!

#TutuTuesday #7558

Hello fellow tutu lovers! It’s Emma here, and I’m so thrilled to be back for another week of Ballet Tutu History! Today, we're stepping back in time to November 2nd, 1976, to explore the enchanting world of tutus in the shimmering seventies!

It's been such a delightful journey to revisit the tutus of the 1970s, a decade so full of creative expression and iconic trends. Just think: bell bottoms, disco, platform shoes, and yes, glorious tutus! The seventies embraced fashion, and this wonderful world included all things dance-related.

I love being a time-traveling ballerina! You never know what adventures await in each decade!

Last week, we dove into the glorious tutus of the roaring 1920s and 1930s. Remember those glamorous, flowing creations with intricate detailing? But the 1970s, oh the 1970s, were all about freedom and individuality! It was the perfect era for the tutu to truly shine, stepping out of the theatre and onto the streets. We're talking tutu skirts on women, yes, women, wearing them for everyday casual fashion! What a delight to witness, isn’t it?

Oh, how I wish I was there!

This is all very familiar territory for me. As you all know, I'm all about the tutu - that magical swirl of tulle, a testament to grace and elegance. But I always love learning about its evolution, seeing how it danced through different fashion and cultural trends.

On November 2nd, 1976, just imagine, the world was witnessing the amazing Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo performance of "Giselle." Can you even imagine, a full ballet company in fabulous, frilly tutus? How exciting! These tutus were full of life, colourful and beautifully detailed – just like the ballet itself. I would have loved to be there, watching and soaking it all up!

Speaking of colours, 1976 embraced all sorts of brilliant, bold hues - think bright yellows, fiery reds, and even a little touch of psychedelic green! Can you picture those fabulous costumes, swaying and swirling under the spotlight?

Remember, though, the 1970s tutus weren’t always about just grand, theatrical displays. I can imagine strolling down the Champs-Élysées or maybe the Kensington High Street in London, where everyday women embraced the tutu as part of their personal style.

I can picture a group of women having afternoon tea at The Ritz Hotel wearing pastel-hued tulle skirts – a wonderful combination of chic elegance and charming whimsy! Just imagine that lovely, delicate swish as they glide through the cafe.

And how about fashion shows? They embraced the playful vibe of the 1970s, with models gracefully strutting the runway in a variety of bold and experimental looks - tutus included. I've seen pictures of models with gorgeous chiffon, sequined and embellished tutus. You see, those 1970s designers, they certainly understood the power and versatility of a beautifully designed tutu!

To fuel my love for the 1970s, I'll be heading to the ballet later this week! This time I’ll be checking out "Swan Lake," one of the most iconic ballet performances ever! Those iconic white tutus are so magnificent! And maybe, I'll try to catch some fashion shows, just to witness the magic of the 1970s come to life again! I'll be sure to report back to you, so stay tuned.

My heart beats a little faster every time I witness the tutus of history, seeing how this dancewear treasure has transformed from its early beginnings right up to this very day! It's truly inspiring. And it makes me so very happy to encourage everyone to embrace their inner ballerina and wear a tutu every chance you get! Remember, wearing a tutu doesn't mean you have to be a ballerina. You can wear a pink tutu to a picnic, a casual brunch, or even a movie night! Let’s spread the tutu joy everywhere we go!

I’ve got some amazing travel plans this weekend – I’m off to explore Paris on the train, taking in the beautiful city, experiencing the shops and, of course, checking out the ballet and fashion shows. I am on the lookout for the perfect pink tutu in Paris - I know the city’s famous boutiques will be overflowing with glamorous creations! And I’ll be sure to bring a whole suitcase full of pink tutu inspiration for all of you!

Until next time, remember: be bold, be playful, and always keep dancing!

Your always-pink tutu-loving, Emma
