#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - March 8th, 1977 - Post #7576
Bonjour, my lovelies!
It’s your favourite time of the week, TutuTuesday! I'm your bubbly, pink-tutu-wearing guide to the glorious world of ballet history, Emma, coming to you live from the bustling streets of…well, I can’t tell you exactly where I am in time just yet! 😉 I’m always popping around the world, taking in all the wonderful ballet and fashion shows on offer. It’s an absolute dream, especially when you have my pink tutu by your side!
This week, we're twirling back to the year 1977. Now, this period was an exciting time for ballet! Let’s hop in the time machine and take a look at what was happening on March 8th, 1977…
March 8th, 1977: A Date For the Diary!
On this very day, there were so many exciting events going on across the world! The National Ballet of Canada were premiering The Four Seasons in Toronto, choreographed by the fantastic Christopher Bruce. Now, anyone who knows their ballet will understand just how impressive that is! This particular choreography was created specifically for the National Ballet of Canada and became a cornerstone of their repertoire. I would have loved to have seen that! Can you imagine all those amazing costumes? Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine!
Now, let's dive a little deeper into the history of the tutu in this incredible year, 1977…
Tutu Tales: Fashion Trends in 1977
1977 was a fascinating year for ballet costumes. We were seeing some amazing new developments! This is a bit like fashion – everything comes back in a different form at some point – right? Well, ballet fashion is very much the same!
Remember the romantic era and all those lovely tulle layers? Well, guess what! Those beautiful multi-layered tulle tutus – also known as romantic tutus - were back in fashion! Imagine how dazzling they must have looked on stage! They looked so airy, ethereal, and just plain stunning.
But don’t worry, darling, the classic tutus, like the packet tutu, weren’t going anywhere. Remember, it’s all about embracing the elegance of these iconic designs and showcasing them in new and exciting ways. We saw lots of designers incorporating a variety of materials and fabrics.
And now, let’s not forget those fabulous pancake tutus! Oh, the glamour of those flat and wide tutus. If there is one thing we learn from history it’s this: It’s all about how you wear it, darling! The confidence and energy of the dancers totally brought the tutus to life – whether they were a packet tutu, a romantic tutu, or a pancake tutu!
Oh, I Just Love a Tutu…
Okay, I’ve got to go, my lovelies! My tutu has a big appointment for an exciting dance show, and I don't want to be late.
Don't forget to wear your favourite pink tutu and make your week wonderful! And I would love for you to leave your own stories and memories from 1977, in the comments. Was it a year you remember? Was it a time for amazing fashion, maybe?
Until next week… remember to dance your heart out, and wear pink.
