#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 12th April 1977! - Blog Post #7581
Oh, darlings, hello from the time machine! This week we’re pirouetting back to 12th April 1977, a date that's bursting with excitement and, naturally, tutus! 🩰
As your ever-so-slightly time-traveling fashion fairy, I’m thrilled to whisk you back to a decade that, dare I say, defined tutu-licious style! From the stage to the streets, tulle was queen. I just love a trip down memory lane, so hold onto your petticoats and prepare to be whisked away on a whirlwind journey!
Let’s start with where we’ve ended up. It’s Paris, darling! The city that absolutely embodies the romantic, graceful, and breathtaking beauty of the tutu. And I’m dressed, of course, in the most dazzling pink tulle number imaginable - oh, I must tell you about this incredible silk one I found in the vintage section of a little shop tucked away in the Marais district. It’s perfect for twirling through cobblestone streets, feeling like a ballerina in the midst of this enchanting city!
Paris, the city of love, the city of ballet, the city of fashion… and tutus? Absolutely! Paris in 1977 was abuzz with excitement for the Grand Ballet du Rhin performance. This spectacular ballet company was a sensation! Everyone who was anyone was vying for tickets to witness the breathtaking artistry, the exquisite costumes, and yes, you guessed it, those gorgeous tutus! Just imagine being swept away by the magic of a live ballet performance, and seeing all those incredible designs on stage, in shades of pink, blush, and ivory… Pure fashion ecstasy!
But it wasn't just about the theatre in 1977. Tutus were a part of everyday life, a little bit of ballet magic sprinkled onto the world. This year, the famous Gelsey Kirkland – a rising star in the world of ballet – was dazzling audiences on the stage in the States! Just picture this gorgeous, talented woman, graceful as a swan, wearing a stunning tutu, wowing crowds with her dancing and inspiring everyone watching. Oh, I could get lost in a daydream about those iconic moments forever.
What were we all wearing in this magnificent era? Think chic but flirty! Flowing, sheer fabrics, delicate lace, and just a hint of sparkle, perfect for pairing with a gorgeous tutu, of course. A simple blouse, some elegant bell bottoms, and that all-important splash of colour, and BAM! You’ve got yourself an outfit worthy of the most fashionable Parisian boutique.
There was so much going on in the world of fashion then, it's truly amazing to think about how the tutus were part of that era’s big picture! For this #TutuTuesday, I'm inspired to take that 70s-inspired ballet style, mix it up with a few 2023 touches and see where the magic leads me!
This time-traveling tutu blogger will be exploring the trends of the era and how we can give our wardrobes a fun, twirling touch! Be sure to visit my www.pink-tutu.com for my next post, and let's keep our tutu history flowing! Until then, wear those tutus, and dance your way into the week!
XOXO, Emma
