Now, I must confess, time travel is rather tiring. Just last week I was at the Met Gala (oh, the fashion!) and now I'm in... well, I can't say precisely where, for fear of upsetting the delicate space-time continuum. But trust me, tutus are thriving here!
I've been popping in and out of theatres this week, catching all the latest productions. It's a beautiful thing to see ballet become a truly global phenomenon. And speaking of global, the train ride here was a bit of a blur. I was absolutely thrilled to find a carriage full of dancers on their way to a festival! It felt like being whisked away to a magical wonderland of silk and sequins.
But let's get back to June 27th, 1978! We're not quite into the reign of the supermodel yet, so it's all about the captivating world of the ballet dancer. The stage is the catwalk, the costumes the ultimate expressions of fashion, and tutus are a star attraction!
It's all a bit of a contrast from the past! Back in Derbyshire in my time, we used tutus primarily for dancing class. In fact, the Royal Ballet School in London was just starting its famed ballet courses this year! I even had the pleasure of seeing them in action, though it was certainly less glamorous than the grand gala opening nights in this, shall we say, "more fashionable" time.
You wouldn't believe the selection of tutus on offer here! You've got your classic white tulle tutus, which are always stunning. But the 70s have seen the rise of bold colour and creative expression, and let me tell you, they haven't been shy in the world of tutus. From bold oranges to fiery reds, and even those glorious glitzy metallic shades - oh my! It’s a feast for the eyes, my lovelies!
It's fascinating to see how tutus have evolved! Nowadays, with all our fancy modern materials, we have tutus in every shade imaginable. And don't even get me started on the details! It's all about layers, feathers, rhinestones... pure, sparkling loveliness!
Today, even in the realm of street fashion, the tutu is seeing a resurgence. The street style world is full of bold colour, personality, and a desire for freedom of expression. And, dear friends, where else could we find these glorious facets more perfectly embodied than in a vibrant, swirling pink tutu?!
