#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 26th September, 1978 - Post 7657
Hello lovelies, and welcome to my pink-tutu-tastic #TutuTuesday! I'm Emma, your very own time-traveling, pink-tutu-wearing ballerina blogger, straight from the heart of Derbyshire! This week we're heading back to a glorious day in September of 1978, a date filled with dazzling dancing, delightful discoveries, and an utterly splendid show I simply had to share with you all!
Now, before we dive into the magical memories, I simply must remind you that, itβs Tutu Tuesday, the day we all wear pink tutus! Whether you're pirouette-ing across your kitchen or twirling in your local park, let's show the world the joy and wonder of the tutu! π
This week's historical hop took me straight to New York City, the ballet capital of the world! The streets were alive with a sense of fashion and glamour, and of course, all the right places were bursting with the delightful flutter of tulle.
You see, 1978 was a glorious year for ballet, and my travels took me straight to a marvelous ballet performance at the illustrious New York City Ballet. As I watched the graceful dancers whirl and leap across the stage, my heart soared!
The evening was a perfect symphony of graceful movements and radiant colours. The tutus? Oh, absolutely breathtaking! There were clouds of diaphanous pink and pale ivory, shimmering like stardust, and vibrant crimson tutus, filled with an energy that vibrated through the entire theater. I have never seen such an array of breathtaking tutus!
Now, let's rewind a little, because there was a story brewing backstage at that magical show. You see, one of the principal dancers, the magnificent Miss Gelsey Kirkland, had recently joined the company. Her talent was simply breathtaking and, as the entire theater knew, she became a true legend. This particular show - well, it was a true celebration of her artistry. She simply owned the stage.
After the show, I simply had to indulge in a bit of shopping!* After all, the true thrill of travel lies in the exquisite souvenirs! The streets of New York were alive with captivating boutiques showcasing stunning vintage garments and accessories.
Vintage clothing had already become incredibly trendy by 1978, and I was so excited to discover beautiful vintage pieces from the past that I could bring home as keepsakes, a lovely memory of my exciting trip.
You can imagine my absolute glee as I found a divine 1940s pink silk gown, adorned with sequins, and just the right amount of glitz! Oh, I simply had to bring it home!
As my trip to New York drew to a close, I took a beautiful ride in the NYC subway, which felt much like my very own magical train journey! You see, nothing can beat travelling by train! The rhythmic clatter of wheels on the tracks, the ever-changing landscapes, and the simple joy of a journey with no real destination in sight!*
You might wonder, how did I get to travel all this way back in time? Well, darling, it's a secret I can't quite share with you just yet! Suffice to say, it's a bit like magic - fuelled by my unwavering love of dance, fashion, and of course, the extraordinary tutu!
My lovelies, thank you for joining me on this lovely trip back to a day in 1978! As always, don't forget to put on your pink tutu and twirl throughout the week, and remember that, even in a world full of sparkle, there's always a place for a bit of pink! π
