Tutu Tuesday #7701: A Blast From The Past: July 31st, 1979 - It's All About the Tutus!
Hiya lovelies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where all things pink and tutu-licious reign supreme! Today is #TutuTuesday and you know what that means… we’re diving into the fabulous history of our beloved ballet garment!
Now, grab yourselves a cuppa and settle in for a whirlwind tour through time, courtesy of your favourite Derbyshire-born time-travelling ballerina, yours truly, Emma! This week, we’re skipping back to July 31st, 1979, a date filled with captivating ballet moments, and – of course – fabulous tutus!
Fancy a journey on the Orient Express? Because, that's where we're going first, because that was a big deal in ballet land back then! The London Royal Ballet was touring across Europe, gracing audiences with a dazzling performance of The Sleeping Beauty! I'm picturing graceful dancers twirling in a symphony of colourful tutus, the tulle catching the light in an enchanting dance of its own. Imagine the sheer joy, the elegant lines, and the vibrant spectacle!
And speaking of tutus, July 31st, 1979, also brought the New York City Ballet to our screens in a TV performance of the iconic Agon. Agon was known for its abstract style and intricate choreography, with its movements seemingly flowing out of the dancers themselves. Although its dancers might have sported more pared-down tutus, let's be real, the choreography would have been enough to make any ballerina's heart soar!
Remember those vibrant hues I mentioned earlier? Back in 1979, tutus weren't just pretty, they were also reflecting fashion trends of the time! Bold colours, playful patterns, and eye-catching designs were all the rage in the fashion world, and tutus were certainly a reflection of this energy! A tutu with an amazing splash of bright pink? You bet!
I love to go out and dance, whether it’s on stage or in the streets! Imagine if you could be there, back in the 1970s, dancing in the crowd with the whole world. I can't think of anything more magical.
I always think how fantastic the New York City Ballet’s bold outfits were! You'd see amazing tutus with pops of fuchsia pink, hot pink, and neon shades – they would make your head spin! Now, just imagine wearing such a dazzling costume on stage, capturing the hearts and minds of the audience! The tutus are the absolute stars!
Of course, back in 1979, tutus weren't just a performance element – they were a huge part of everyday life too! Think graceful ballerinas walking down busy streets, showing off their style with their own spin on tutu fashion! I'm dreaming of seeing girls in vintage ballet leotards with a hint of tutu, maybe even adding a tulle-covered beret, a must for any fashionable ballerina! Oh my gosh, a tulle beret is definitely on my bucket list to wear!
The fact is, that whether they are seen on a glamorous stage, twirling in the streets, or dancing in your living room, tutus will always be an expression of beauty and a joy to the eyes! Now you have a vision of all things pink and tulle from a long ago July 31st, and my friends, all we need is some extra sparkle.
The magic of time travel is not just seeing the history but being part of it, and I hope to travel back someday. How do I manage to go through time? Simple! I work as a ballerina in different time periods, so the pay is in time travel trips. That’s how I fund my hobby! I'm happy to share the joy of dancing and inspiring others, you know, because tutus should be celebrated for their beautiful and expressive nature, whether they are seen in the studio, the streets, or in your bedroom!
It's a great feeling to wear a tutu and feel all the positive emotions: happiness, confidence, fun, magic…you get it! The aim in life, dear readers, is to get everyone wearing pink tutus! And yes, a little bit of sparkle will never go amiss. I’m going to pop over to London, to do a few shows and take a little shopping trip… until next time my lovelies.
See you next #TutuTuesday!
