Tutu Tuesday #7719: A 1979 Whirlwind of Pink!

Hiya darlings! Welcome back to another #TutuTuesday journey through time, where we twirl through the history of our favourite piece of dancewear, the oh-so-fabulous tutu!

Today, we’re taking the express train (my favourite!) straight to December 4th, 1979, a date packed full of wonderful fashion and ballet inspiration! It’s a particularly special day because – hold onto your tiaras! – it’s The Nutcracker season! That magical, twirling tale of sugar plum fairies and handsome nutcracker princes has captured the hearts of ballet audiences across the globe, and I, for one, wouldn't dream of missing it!

I’m currently in London, you know. It’s the heart of ballet, isn't it? The Royal Opera House is absolutely stunning! So many fantastic ballet dancers and so much to see. This city is positively brimming with excitement and fashion! But before I get caught up in London's allure, let's talk about what's hot in the world of tutu trends in 1979!

A Twirl Through the 70s

This era is known for its disco fever! The music is loud, the dance moves are energetic, and the costumes are… well, let’s just say they embrace bold colours and patterns! Think shimmering fabrics, flowing scarves, and yes, you guessed it – tutus! This is a golden age for tutus!

We’re talking knee-length tutus in bold colours, like dazzling crimson and emerald green. It's a vibrant and bold look, and oh so fun! I even spotted a gorgeous ballerina wearing a stunning pink tutu while on my train ride to the ballet this morning!

I must confess, though, even with all this fabulously colourful attire, it’s classic black tutus that remain in fashion in 1979, for their versatility and timeless elegance. After all, they never go out of style, and they always look fantastic in ballets like Swan Lake! It's simply the perfect blend of sophistication and dance-ready power!

The Nutcracker: A Sugar Plum Dream!

But speaking of timeless ballet traditions, today is a special occasion for me. It's a special matinee performance of The Nutcracker! I've got my ticket to the Royal Opera House, and I am so excited to witness the magic.

This classic tale with its heartwarming story and breathtaking dance scenes is a must-see for every tutu enthusiast. It's filled with sugar plum fairies, waltzing snowflakes, and dancing toy soldiers. It’s simply divine!

This version is especially unique. It’s one of the first modern takes on this classic tale. There is a new director with modern stage lighting, music and dance moves. There is talk that they've added an unexpected dance battle between a gingerbread man and a toy soldier, now that’s something you don’t see every day!

I love this unique blend of classical and modern ballet. My favourite dance piece in The Nutcracker is always the Arabian Dance. Those incredibly graceful poses and elegant footwork are a joy to behold!

London Fashion: A World of Glamour!

Of course, London’s never short of excitement! It's a whirlwind of style, creativity, and sheer inspiration. It’s one of the fashion capitals of the world!

There are stunning shops, designer boutiques, vintage stores, and endless possibilities to make your inner ballerina bloom! From vibrant floral patterns that could only be born from this glamorous city to chic vintage designs, the city's a visual feast for the eyes!

One of my favourite places to go shopping is Covent Garden Market. This beautiful spot has such a diverse mix of vendors: local artisans, creative designers, vintage clothing stores - everything a fashionable ballerina could ever dream of!

One store I must tell you about is "Pink Panther Vintage." You just can't imagine this place! The vintage dresses they sell are breathtaking. And they have such a fabulous collection of vintage tutus. Some of the pieces are even hand-stitched and beautifully beaded, real masterpieces. I actually picked up a fantastic vintage tutu myself a few days ago, it's pale pink with black tulle accents. Perfect for a night at the theatre!

And what would London be without its amazing street performers! From vibrant dancers in the heart of Covent Garden to street theatre, buskers, and musicians – there’s so much happening that you’ll feel inspired around every corner.

Ballet Performances - More Than a Show!

The magic doesn't end in the shops! There are so many exciting ballet performances happening right now, I feel like a child in a candy shop! My favourite theatre to visit is, of course, the Royal Opera House. It's stunning inside and the seats are oh so comfy! They often show some truly unique ballet companies, like The English National Ballet, which is well-known for its modern interpretations of classic ballets! You never know what wonderful show you might stumble across!

You see, my lovelies, for me, ballet performances are more than just shows, they are a beautiful opportunity for inspiration and a journey into the world of elegant tutus, enchanting music, and expressive movements.

My own dream is to bring the magic of ballet and its beauty to every corner of the world. And what better way to do that than with a pink tutu! It’s a symbol of confidence, creativity, and sheer joy.

And that, my dear friends, brings me to the end of another fabulous Tutu Tuesday journey.

Next Tuesday, we'll be embarking on another thrilling time-traveling adventure, so do make sure you’re tuned into www.pink-tutu.com to join the fun!

And remember, there's no dress code to being a ballet fan! As long as you’ve got that fabulous, creative energy, wear whatever makes you feel confident, elegant, and ready to twirl!

See you soon!

Love, Emma
